Senior Living Communities: What Empty Nesters Should Know

This post is sponsored by A Place for Mom. I only highlight brands I truly love and believe would be helpful to you. Thank you for supporting the brands that support Empty Nest Blessed.
I’ve noticed a growing conversation among my empty-nester friends—many of us are smack in the sandwich generation, squeezed between four generations of love and responsibility. We’ve got adult kids still finding their footing, grandchildren filling our hearts with sweetness, AND aging parents who now need our care. If you’re a caregiver, you know it’s a lot to carry emotionally, mentally—and time-wise.
Sometimes, caring for elderly parents feels like juggling on a tightrope. It can be difficult to even begin that conversation with your loved one. ( I love THESE tips from a gerontologist.) Even with support, the weight of finding safe, enriching senior living communities can be overwhelming. You want what’s best for your loved ones, but you also need to preserve your own energy and peace.

That’s Where A Place for Mom Comes In
I was so happy to learn about a trusted ally for caregivers, called A Place for Mom. I’m so honored to introduce this helpful service to you.

A Place for Mom is a referral service that helps families find the right senior living communities or home‑care services—and here’s the game‑changer: it’s a no‑cost service to you and your loved ones. (They’re paid by participating communities, not by families—so there’s no pressure and no catch.) They work with over 18,000 senior living communities and home care providers across America!
Here’s How it Works
1. Get Matched with a Local Expert
You’ll be paired with a personal Senior Living Advisor who knows your area inside and out and can help you understand your family’s options. They’ll listen, ask thoughtful questions, and truly see your family’s needs.
2. Share Your Story
Your advisor will want to understand your aging loved one’s health needs, preferences, and lifestyle. Whether you’re exploring independent living, assisted living, memory care, or even home care, they’ll guide you toward what makes sense for your specific situation and budget.
3. Receive Personalized Recommendations
Your Senior Living Advisor will prepare a personalized, curated list of senior living communities or home care providers—tailored to your specific situation, needs, and budget. There’s no stress of sorting through options on your own.
4. Take Tours & Ask Questions
Your advisor can help set up community tours (either virtual or in-person), walk you through each option, and answer all your questions—big or small. Not sure what questions to ask? They can even help with that.
5. Feel Supported Every Step of the Way
Even after you find the right fit, your advisor is still there to help you streamline the move-in process and make sure you feel confident and your loved one feels cared for.
Real Help, Real Heart
What I love the most about A Place for Mom is that it’s a no-cost service. That’s huge, especially when you’re already feeling the emotional and financial weight of caregiving. Right? You can trust that your advisor won’t be pushy or salesy—but compassionate, knowledgeable, and committed to walking this road with you.

Hi Suzy, I just want to give a shout out to “A PLACE FOR MOM”. I used them in 2019 when I was looking for a Memory Care Home for my mom. What made it difficult is that I live in Buffalo, NY and She Fredericksburg, VA. I actualy just googled “MEMORY CARE HOMES ” and up popped: A PLACE FOR MOM. As soon as I entered my info, within in 30 seconds my phone wa ringing from this organization. In less than an hour they had set up 5 visits for me in her area. They were wonderful and so easy to work with and really CARED about me and having to place my mom somehwere. I would recommend them to everyone with out hesitation. It’s a great organization, pouring out with compassion, understanding, kindness, empathythy & knowledge in all areas needed.
Cheryl,
Thank you so much for sharing their story. If you follow me here, you know that I rarely accept sponsored posts. I have to REALLY believe in what I’m talking about. A Place for Mom made it easy and I have talked to several others who echo your story!
Grateful to you for your support and for sharing your personal testimony!

Suzy, if you or someone else is looking for a place in D/FW area, I highly recommend Senior Living Specialists (www.seniorlivingspecialists.com). Paul Markowitz founded this company and is outstanding! We have used him several times and we have referred numerous people to him. Everyone we have sent to him is super pleased with his knowledge and professionalism in the DFW area and they too do not charge for their services. Glad you wrote about this, it is a need of many.
Carol,
Thanks so much for sharing. A Place for Mom is complimentary as well, and I think that’s so important to note! They have a lot of great resources on their website – I was really impressed!
So glad to know about your experience and I’m grateful for your comment!

This was a timely article. I too learned of A Place for Mom and recently moved my Mother into a Memory Care facility in Richmond, VA I live in Indiana. And my brother lives in Richmond too. The service was super easy and they are very patient with all of our questions. It’s quite the roller coaster of emotions and it helps that they’ve probably heard our questions a million times, but each person/family has unique issues and they truly do care about the well being for everyone involved with the care. I happy to report that Mother is thriving and we truly feel like she’s in the right place.
