Live Luxuriously: About Lilysilk

Lilysilk was founded in 2011 by Lily Lin, who, after spending more than a decade working in France’s silk industry, wanted to create an alternative to the prevailing business modelthe one where retailers realized huge profits, customers paid huge premiums, and silk workers remained in relative poverty. She wanted to create an online outlet that would link Chinese silk weavers directly to Western silk lovers. She convinced her husband, Mike, and some friends to buy into her vision, and this unique company was born.

Live Luxuriously: My Experience With Lilysilk Clothing

Lilysilk sent me one of their best-selling items: the Basic Cap Sleeve Silk Tee. It is so luxurious to the touchit feels incredible on my skin! It comes in twelve rich colors (click HERE to see them all), and it runs TTS, but with a relaxed fit. It would be gorgeous under a blazer or cardigan, or alone for a special occasion. (I’m thinking of ordering it in “Claret” for the holidays!)

The Basic Cap Sleeve Silk Tee is made of , and I love the glossy sheen! “Charmeuse” refers to a specific weaving method that provides the extra luster and shine on the front side of the fabric with a matte finish at the back. It’s a weave that is typically used on products like pillowcases and duvet covers that don’t require a glossy finish on both sides of the fabric. Charmeuse silk is ideal for things like scarves, blouses, and lingerie because it offers better drape than (a more lightweight weave).

Live Luxuriously: My Experience With Lilysilk Pillowcases

The beauty benefits of silk pillowcases are well-documented in multiple studies. Here are a few that I found when I was researching this post:

  • Wrinkle Prevention – A smooth surface means less tugging on skin and fewer ‘crush wrinkles’ (from sleeping on the sides of your face) than a traditional cotton pillowcase.
  • Frizzy Hair Prevention – Hair glides over a silk pillowcase without any friction, meaning you’re less likely to wake up to frizzies, tangles, or bedhead.
  • Increased Skin & Hair Hydration – The smoothness of a silk pillowcase makes it less apt to absorb moisture from skin and hair. This makes it ideal for anyone with dry skin or hair.
  • Temperature-Regulating – Unlike cotton, which absorbs moisture, silk fibers naturally wick moisture away, keeping you dry and cool all night long.
  • More Hygenic – Silk pillowcases absorb less moisture and dirt than cotton. Cotton pillowcases soak in the natural oil and bacteria from your face and hair, which accumulate night after night, creating an ideal environment for bacteria. ????

I tried Lilysilk’s best-selling 19 Momme Envelope Silk Pillowcase in “Rosy Pink.” It’s available in thirteen colors in standard, queen, or king sizes. It’s available with either an envelope or zipper closure. Lilysilk also has pillowcases available in 22 momme, or 25 momme.

Momme (also referred to as “mm”) is a Japanese unit of measurement that measures silk weight, quality, and durability much like thread count in Cotton. The higher the momme, the denser, and durable the fabric is. The 19mm silk pillowcase has a thread count of 400. The 22mm silk pillowcase has a thread count of 600, and the 25mm silk pillowcase has a thread count of 750.

Silk products with higher momme weight aren’t necessarily the best choice! For example, wearing 25mm silk sleepwear would probably be heavier and hotter than you’d want, but 19mm silk sleepwear would not be as durable as a higher weight. (That’s why Lilysilk’s sleepwear is made with 22mm silk.)

I’m a big believer in the benefits of silk pillowcases, and I’ve used one for years. I love the fact that Lilysilk offers silk pillowcases (along with clothing, sleepwear, bedding, lingerie, and accessories in high-quality silk for affordable prices. I loved the , but honestly, I found it thinner than I wanted. The next time I order, I’m splurging for the thicker and more luxurious 25mm pillowcase!

Live Luxuriously: Caring For Silk

Silk can either be washed by hand or in the washing machine on a gentle cycle. Use cold water, turn your silk items inside out, and place them in a mesh laundry bag. Harsh chemicals like alkaline and bleach can cause silk fibers to harden, so you’ll want to use a special detergent like Tenestar, which doesn’t contain any chemicals or lipid-replenishers, and will help silk retain its color, shine, and smoothness. Air dry your silk products.

Iron silk clothing on the backside of the fabric in order to avoid any damage on the sheen side. Be sure to use the special “silk” setting on your iron, or the lowest possible setting you have. You may even want to use a thin sheet of cotton as a barrier between your iron and the silk fabric.
