Emmanuel, God With Us: Christmas in the Empty Nest

As I sit down to write this, my heart is full. Christmas has a way of doing that. It also has a way of stirring up memories, emotions, expectations, and sometimes a few tears we didn’t plan on shedding. If you’re in the empty nest season (or post-menopausal!), you know exactly what I mean.

Christmas looks different now. And that’s not a bad thing. It’s just… different. We’re out of our family home. We’re in an apartment this year. We’re not hosting. Yep. Different.
Even though everything feels different, what I keep coming back to, day after day, is this simple yet life-changing truth: Emmanuel. It literally means God with us.
Not God watching from a distance. Not God waiting for us to get it all together. God with us. Right here. In the joy and in the ache of regrets. In the laughter around the table and in the quiet moments when the house feels a little too still.
That is what Christmas means to me.
The Heart of Christmas: Emmanuel

The angel told Joseph, “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”). Matthew 1:23
Those words never get old. God chose to step into our world, into our hot mess, into our humanity. Christmas is not about perfectly-wrapped gifts. It’s not even about cherished traditions like game nights or holiday movies, or matching pajamas. It’s about presence. His presence.
From the very beginning of Scripture, God has been reminding His people that He is with them.
“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid… for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” Deuteronomy 31:6
“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you.” Isaiah 43:2
“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted.” Psalm 34:18
“And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:20
This is the thread woven throughout the Bible. God with us. Always.

Christmas in the Empty Nest
Let’s be honest. Christmas as an empty nester can bring a mix of emotions. There may be adult kids coming home, or not. There may be new traditions being formed, or old ones quietly fading. There may be joy you didn’t expect, and disappointments you wish weren’t there.
And you know what? That’s normal. I’m right there with you.
If you’ve read my book, Empty Nest Blessed: 60 Days to Finding Joy in the Empty Nest, you know that I believe one of the biggest joy stealers at Christmas is expectations. Expecting things to look the way they used to. Expecting people to show up in certain ways. Expecting moments to feel just like they always have.
Expectations can quietly rob us of joy if we let them.
Instead, I want to gently encourage you to hold this season with open hands. Palms up.
Palms Up Living
You’ve heard me talk about palms-up living before. It’s choosing to trust God enough to receive whatever comes with open hands. It’s saying, “Lord, I trust You with this season. With my family. With my heart.”
When we live palms up, we stop trying to control outcomes and start resting in the One who already holds them.
This year, there will be moments of delight. Sweet, surprising moments that fill your heart in ways you didn’t see coming. There may also be moments that sting a little. Conversations that don’t go as you hoped. Traditions that feel different. Empty chairs that remind you how much has changed.
God is with you in all of it.
And because He is with you, you can do this.
“I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.” Philippians 4:13
That verse isn’t about powering through perfectly. It’s about leaning on Him completely.
Loving Unconditionally This Christmas
Christmas invites us to love without keeping score. To show grace where it’s needed. To listen more than we speak. To let go of the need for everything to be just right. To use our mouths to encourage and bless without expecting anything in return. To be a good friend to our adult kids. To welcome those who are new to our nest. To support your kids who are struggling.
Love your people where they are. Love yourself with the same kindness. And remember that the greatest gift you bring into any room this season is not what you’ve planned, cooked, wrapped, or organized. It’s your love and a joyful presence.
You can do it, because His presence lives in you.
That is Emmanuel at work.
My Gift to You
If I could wrap one message up and place it under your tree🎁, this is what I’d want you to open: a reminder that you are not alone. Not in this season. Not in this stage. Not in the quiet moments or the joyful ones.
God is with you. And that’s everything.
Thank You
Before I close, I want to say thank you. Truly.

Suzy, I truly needed to hear this post. Giving up expectations is a hard one but something that should be done. I am going to try this.
I also try to remember to savor each moment and be thankful for them all.
Your emails are a bright spot in my week. Thank you for them.
I hope they continue in the new year.
Juliet,
So kind of you! It’s a challenge for all of us to hold those expectations loosely! We have them in place for ourselves as well as others and feeling let down us so difficult. How precious to have a Savior who will never let us down and is ever-faithful!
Merry Christmas, sweet mama!

Suzy
Thank you, Suzy, for a beautiful and inspirational message. Yes, each year may look a bit different, but the true meaning of Christmas never changes. Wishing you many blessings and a very Merry Christmas!
Helen,

Blessings to you and your family, and thank you for being here!

This is our first Christmas without our son. (He’s our one and only.) He’ll be with his fiance’s family. I’m trying to remember the things you wrote here. But oh my heart hurts right now! BUT GOD… He is so so good!! And the reason for the season. Thank you for your wisdom!
Oh sweet Susan,
I am praying for you. It must be so difficult! I am so sorry for your pain. God is faithful and He feels your pain, sweet mama. Know that I am thinking of you.

Suzy
Suzy, what precious and appropriate words for a season of change! Thank you for reminding us that even in this world of upheaval, isolation, and uncertainty, God is the one true constant. His love isn’t fleeting, and doesn’t end when the holidays are over.
Merry Christmas, Dear Girl!
Sandi,
Aren’t we blessed that He is so faithful and constant? Thank you for your kind words!
Christmas blessings to you!

I love how you have reminded us that even those this season may look different, it does not take God by surprise. He is with us! I needed to hear this today. I love the “palms up” trusting the Lord with today and what comes our way in the future. Powerful reminder to me for sure. Our only child is 28 years old and in the grip of Satan right now. His future is terrifying. We need a Christmas miracle! My palms are up and waiting and trusting. Thank you again for sharing the truth to your readers! Bless you!
Lesa,
Thank you for your comment. I am so sorry to hear about your son. I am praying for you and for him, sweet Mama!

I LOVE this and I LOVE you! Such a good reminder for any year!
Jenn,
Missing you this year, my sweet sister! Thanks for this comment!
