The Top Ten 2024 Fall Fashion Trends to Know
This post is sponsored by Talbots. I only highlight and share products that I use and truly love. Thank you for supporting the brands that support Empty Nest Blessed!
Every year, I wade through the fall fashion trends to figure out what to add to my wardrobe. I’m not trying to be too trendy, but, like most of you, I want to look updated, current, and in the know when it comes to the latest looks. Today, I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to partner with Talbots to share the top ten 2024 fall fashion trends you need to know to update your wardrobe for the season!
If you’ve followed me for a while now, you know how much I love Talbots! Simply put, I think they do the best job of translating the trends into wearable, high-quality pieces that make women feel confident and classy! I can count on their clothing for interesting details, cuts that flatter a woman’s body, and on-trend styles. In the past, I’ve shared fashion tips from one of their senior brand stylists, Barb Benesh. You can see those posts HERE and HERE.
Starting today, Talbots is celebrating their Anniversary! To celebrate, they’ve (thoughtfully!) decided to offer 25% off (nearly) everything right now! As usual, you can click on any text link or image in this post to see additional color options, get pricing information, or place an order! Things will sell out, so don’t wait too long!
1. Brown
This season, it might be time to take a break from black! From chocolate and ginger-brown to caramel & taupe, brown is the hot new neutral for fall.
Mixed Cable Moto Sweater Jacket | Autumn Check (Houndstooth) Greenwich Wide Leg Pants | Brown Patent Leather Bow Ballet Flats | Geo Drop Earrings | Tiger’s Eye Stretch Bracelet
Wear this Cable Moto Sweater Jacket unzipped as a jacket or zipped as a sweater like I did. (I do love a good peplum!😄) The sweater jacket is a perfect example of textural detailing, and the gold hardware makes it look so high-end! Also, these chocolate brown patent ballet flats are a great basic for the season! They fit TTS and are comfortable.
Want to make brown look especially modern and fresh? Pair it with pinks or blues for a fun, unexpected pairing. ⬇️

Modern Classic Shirt (Botanical Garden) – under sweater | Cable Knit Crewneck Sweater – Wavy Stripe | Reversible Quilted Vest (Botanical Garden) | Stretch Corduroy Flare Leg Pants | Tish Suede Buckle Ankle Boots | Sculptural Hoop Earrings
This year, I’ve been slightly obsessed (Bob would say more than slightly!) with Talbots’ new AirKnit collection. (See below!) I can’t say enough about the delicious fabric and easy-to-wear styles. I’ve worn AirKnit styles the last few times I’ve traveled and actually had people stop me in the airport to ask where I got my outfit! (See THIS Instagram post and THIS Instagram post.)

2. Column Dressing
Have you heard of “column dressing?” It’s a huge fall 2024 fashion trend! The term refers to a style where an outfit is made up of a single color from head to toe. The goal of column dressing is to create a long, unbroken line of color that elongates your body and provides a sleek, streamlined silhouette. It’s slimming and elegant, and I think it projects strength and confidence.
SUZY’S PRO TIP: When creating a column of color, select a hue that is especially flattering to your skin tone for maximum impact.
Texture Stitch Mockneck Sweater | Stretch Corduroy Wide Leg Pants (I love the trendy front patch pockets!) | Suede Penny Loafers | Sculptural Hoop Earrings | Sculptural Pendant Necklace
BTW, the Texture Stitch Mockneck Sweater I’m wearing in this photo is also an excellent example of the emphasis on interesting textures we’re seeing this season. (See #8 below.)
3. Moody Dark Florals
Although we’re used to associating florals with spring, dark florals are one of the top 2024 fall fashion trends! From dresses and tops to sweaters and gorgeous embroidered jeans, you need to add moody florals to your wardrobe this season! Floral, but make it fall! I styled this super soft floral sweater over a sweet, feminine blouse for an unexpected touch.
Gathered Leaves Ruffle Top | Blossom Blooms Crewneck Sweater | Dark Wash Trouser Jeans | Beaded Hoop Earrings | Ryan Bit Soft Nappa Leather Loafers
I think the dark wash trouser jeans I’m wearing above are such a good silhouette for fall. They’re still jeans, but thanks to the style and the dark wash, they’re easy to dress up or down. (They came home with me!)
SUZY’S PRO TIP: When it comes to styling, details matter! In the look above, you’ll notice I pulled out the blouse’s ruffled cuffs and collar so they would peek out from the sweater. The result is a polished look that shows I put thought and effort into my style.
The midi dress below is another example of moody, dark florals. The flattering fit & flare silhouette and v-neckline make it ideal for fall weddings, showers, or other events! It’s tough to tell from the photo, but the fabric has a metallic thread running throughout!
If you’re one of those people 🙋♀️who used to associate metallics with the holidays, I have news for you: they’re one of the biggest 2024 fall fashion trends! Look for metallic threading running through sweaters, dresses, tops, and definitely consider investing in a pair of metallic shoes (or sneakers!) you love. Think of metallic shoes as a neutral, and pair them with anything!
Graceful Floral Midi Dress | Suede Block Heel Pumps | Two-Tone Link Necklace | Geo Drop Earrings
4. New Necklines
The new necklines this season are wearable and pretty! Say buh-bye to those tight turtle necks of years gone by that gave you a double chin whether you had one or not! 😂 Instead, this year, think flattering johnny collars, wearable funnel necks and mock necks, and even reimagined tie-neck blouses (like this one in denim).
Non-Iron Popover (in “Luxuriant Leopard“) See other patterns HERE. | Chatham Slim Ankle Pants | Brown Patent Leather Bow Ballet Flats | Sculptural Hoop Earrings
The preppy Johnny collar style is such a clean, preppy look. The preppy look is back for fall 2024, and in keeping with that, I thought these suede penny loafers finished off my look below perfectly!
Autumn Fair Isle Johnny Collar Sweater | Corduroy Button Front A-Line Skirt | Suede Penny Loafers | Cluster Bead Stud Earrings | Mixed Bead Stretch Bracelet Set
5. Denim (Like You’ve Never Seen It!)
Ohhhh, y’all! Denim is having its day! Look for modern denim in so many styles:
- Embroidered
- Suiting
- Dresses
- Cuffed
- Trouser style
- Colored
- And lots more! See all of Talbots’ denim styles HERE.
Also worth noting: denim isn’t just for pants anymore! Check out these denim styles:
I love the casual style of the cuffed jeans I’m wearing below. It was so tough to decide how to style them because they’re so versatile! (I took this as a sign that they needed to come home with me! 😄)
Straight Ankle Cuffed Jeans | Mixed Cable Knit Crewneck Sweater | Teal Herringbone Ballet Flats | Cluster Bead Stud Earrings | Mixed Bead Stretch Bracelet Set
SUZY’S PRO TIP: Remember, the darker the jeans, the dressier the look.
This season, you’ll also want to look for colored jeans! This winter white pair I’m wearing below is a new style for Talbots, and it ended up being one of my favorites at the end of my try-on day! They’re called Slim Straight Ankle Jeans, and I liked the comfortable fit (read that: not tight over the hips and thighs) and the bit of stretch that made them easy to move in. They also come in medium-wash and dark-wash denim.

6. Luxe & Ladylike
Ladies who lunch? Yes, please! When it comes to the 2024 fall fashion trends, you’ll see lots of ladylike cropped jackets and cardigans, as well as luxe cashmere sweaters. On your feet, think classy and classic, ballet flats, chic and easy-to-walk-in block heel pumps, and country club-worthy loafers that give off a luxury vibe.
It’s hard to tell, but this tweed jacket has a metallic thread running through it! I love the way the Charmeuse blouse pulls it out.
Fringe Tweed Cropped Jacket | Satin Charmeuse Button Front Shirt | Chatham Slim Ankle Pants | Suede Block Heel Pumps | Twisted Bangle Bracelet | Sculptural Hoop Earrings
SUZY’S PRO TIP: For accessories, think beautiful stones and luxe metallics to add polish and flair this season.
7. Textural Details
Chunky cardis, cable knits, and corduroy, oh my! Texture abounds this year, and it’s so much fun! I love seeing texture in unexpected styles like this corduroy shift dress and this tweed mock neck sweater.
Multi Jacquard Mockneck Sweater | AirKnit Stretch Joggers (Navy) See other colors HERE | Gola Mark Cox Tennis Sneakers (Excluded from promotional offers) | Cluster Bead Stud Earrings | Mixed Bead Stretch Bracelet Set
I think the vest I’m wearing below is a perfect example of using texture in an unexpected way! A quilted cable knit zip-up sweater vest? Count me in!
Metallic Stripe Crop Turtleneck | Quilted Sweater Vest | Sculptural Hoop Earrings
8. Animal Prints
Wear the classic animal print as a neutral, and wear it everywhere this fall! It’s not just for accessories anymore! (Although there are still plenty of those!) Ready to be bold? Mix an animal print with other prints for an unpredictable, whimsical pairing!
SUZY’S PRO TIP: When you’re mixing prints, make sure your prints share at least one color, or pair prints in the same color palette, like pastels, earth tones, or jewel tones.
Satin Charmeuse Button Front Shirt | Leopard Satin Midi Skirt | Suede Block Heel Pumps | Twisted Bangle Bracelet | Gold Pendant Necklace | Geo Drop Earrings
For a modern twist on animal prints, look for animal print done differently this season, like my super soft merino wool sweater below that combines animal print with the prettiest shade of blue. (Making it super cute with jeans!) Check out the coordinating scarf HERE.
Leopard Dot Merino Wool Scoop Neck Sweater | Dark Wash Trouser Jeans | Braided Suede Belt | Brown Patent Leather Bow Ballet Flats | Tiger’s Eye Stretch Bracelet | Resin Hoop Earrings
SUZY’S PRO TIP: If you pair a sweater or shirt with jeans and it feels too casual, either tuck it in or half-tuck it and add a belt. It elevates your entire look!
9. A Vested Interest
Vests are having a moment! The giant puffer vests that were big a few years ago (and didn’t do anyone any favors!) have been replaced by quilted vests that give a similar look but with a slimmer profile.
The best news? The reversible quilted vests at Talbots mean you’re getting a two-fer! I love THIS one that has an animal print on one side and chic black on the other and THIS floral one that reverses to yellow/gold!
In addition to quilted vests, look for:
- Menswear style vests.
- Cable knit vests (See #7 above.)
- Faux Shearling vests
- Ladylike vests
- Sweater vests
- And more! Check out all of Talbots’ vests HERE.
Reversible Vest (See other color options HERE) | Ditsy Meadow Modern Classic Shirt | Stretch Corduroy Flare Leg Pants | Bit Soft Nappa Leather Loafers | Beaded Hoop Earrings
I love the reversible vest below from the T by Talbots line. (It’s tough to tell from the photo, but the navy side is yummy sherpa fleece!)
Reversible Sherpa Puffer Vest (reverses to teal) | Supersoft Jersey Long Sleeve Tee | AirKnit Stretch Joggers | Gola® Mark Cox Tennis Sneakers (excluded from discounts) | Cluster Bead Stud Earrings | Mixed Bead Stretch Bracelet Set
10. Classic Coats
Classic coats in stunning colors are one of the biggest 2024 fall fashion trends! Find a coat, blazer, or jacket in your most flattering color and buy it!
Look for menswear-inspired styles with a feminine twist, shawl collars, classic double-breasted coats, and elegant, rich suede. Also, you’ll see gorgeous coats in saturated hues, like blue, spruce, wine, or red.
Italian Melton Wool Blend Coat | Imperial Floral Cashmere Sweater | Dark Wash Trouser Jeans | Teal Herringbone Ballet Flats | Cluster Bead Stud Earrings
The gorgeous shirt jacket below is giving me all of the Princess Kate in Scotland vibes! 👑 I can just picture it with a pair of wellies as she wanders the moors! 😄
Belted Quilted Shirt Jacket | Cable Knit Half-Zip Sweater | Stretch Corduroy Relaxed Straight Leg Pants | Brown Patent Leather Bow Ballet Flats | Cluster Bead Stud Earrings | Mixed Bead Stretch Bracelet Set
I hope you feel well-educated on the 2024 fall fashion trends now! Which one is your favorite? Leave me a comment and let me know! Got any questions? Drop them in the comments and I’ll get right back to you.
Many thanks to my friends at Talbots for sponsoring this post, and a huge thank you, especially to the team at the Preston Oaks Talbots in Dallas. Sales Manager Robin Faircloth took all of the photos in this post, and she made it so much fun for me. I’m so grateful!
