Fall is in the air, and with it, fresh fall fashion styles to, well, fall for! So what’s new for fall? What do you have in your closet that’s still good? What do you need to donate or resell? I’m going to answer all of those questions and more! There are lots of new fall trends out there, and today I’m sharing the top five that you need to know.

First of all, be sure you read my other 2022 Fall Fashion trends posts, or you’ll be behind when it comes to what we’re going to cover today! Those posts will help you as you navigate through this one.

I’ve done my best to choose well-priced items to save you time and clicks! For more information on anything (including other color options), click the pink text links or any image.

About the Fall Fashion Styles

The first thing you need to know is that fashion really isn’t all that complex! Every season we see three distinct trends emerge:

  • Fall Classics – All of these styles are still good! Here’s how to wear them this year:
  • Throwback – Every year, some decade comes back and inspires the styles — but with distinct variations! For fall 2022, it’s the 80s! Think platform mules, loafers, booties, and platform sneakers, for example. This year, you’ll see them with lug soles, like THIS pair of loafers. (More on that in my next post on 2022 fall accessory and shoe trends.)
  • Cycling Through – Most fashion trends have about a 4-year cycle. In year one, it’s on the fashion runways, in designer collections, and on celebrities (read that: it’s expensive!). In year two, you’ll see it at some of the department stores and mid-price brands like J.Crew and Chico’s. In years 2-3, you’ll see it hit the mass marketers like Target and Walmart. By year 4, you’ll still be able to find it, but you’ll see it fade away. That means it’s probably time for you to donate or resell. This year, do that with:
    • Tie-Dye
    • Ultra skinny jeans like jeggings
    • Loose and baggy loungewear
    • Low rise jeans

5 Major Fall Fashion Styles You Need to Know

Of course, there are more than five, but I’ve chosen the ones that I think are most relevant and wearable for empty nesters. (But, of course!😊) Within each trending style, there are variations, which make the trends wearable for various body types. 🙌

Denim

Schoolboy Sweater-Blazer (Click HERE for other colors.) | White Knit Camisole (Click HERE for other colors.) | ‘Ab’Solution Distressed Girlfriend Jeans | Similar Snake Print Belt | Western Inspired Booties (Use code SUZY15 for 15% off sitewide.) | Gold Huggie Earrings | Tory Burch Apple Watch Band (Click HERE for other colors.) | Abbie Strand Necklace | Bennett Tennis Necklace | Hestia Necklace

When it comes to denim styles this year, almost anything goes. Look for ankle length (all the better to let your shoes or booties show!). Distressing (actual rips and holes) and threadbare (holes covered by threads) styles are still out there, but this year, we’re seeing patchwork denim burst onto the scene as the newest look. (More on that below.)

Skinny jeans and jeggings are still around, but I wouldn’t buy any more of them. They won’t look as fresh and updated as these styles :

Faux Leather

Collin Top (Use code SUZY15 for 15% off sitewide.) | Faux Leather Shorts | Block Heel Sandals (Such a classic style — I’ve had these for 3 years!) | Gucci Crossbody | Pearl Apple Watch Band | Pearl Hoop Earrings

As I told you in my 2022 Fall Fashion Trends: Colors, Fabrics & Embellishments post, faux leather may just be the biggest trend of the year! Like, if you’re only going to add one item to your wardrobe this year, it needs to be something in faux leather!

You probably already have a faux leather moto jacket in your wardrobe. (If not, that should be your first purchase!) This year, be on the lookout for additional faux leather pieces to add. They will be everywhere!

Consider THIS faux leather shacket or THESE faux leather joggers that are perfect for running around town doing errands. A pleated faux leather midi skirt is a figure-flattering option, as the vertical pleats provide a slimming optical illusion. I also really like this A-line faux leather skirt from figure-friendly NYDJ and THIS faux leather wrap skirt from Amazon’s The Drop. And if it’s still really hot where you live, do what I did and opt for a pair of faux leather shorts like THIS flat-front pair from Nordstrom or THIS drawstring-waist pair from Amazon.

For some budget-friendly options, consider THESE high-rise faux leather tapered ankle pants from Target or THIS faux leather puff sleeve shirtdress from Walmart. THESE straight-leg jeans from Amazon are also good ones to consider. Here are some other budget-friendly options to consider.

Color Blocking

Color blocking has been around for a while, but this year, it’s bigger and bolder than ever! Check out THIS color block hoodie and THESE matching sweatpants from Amazon. Whoa!

We’re not only seeing bold color blocking, but we’re also seeing a derivative of it in denim. Called patchwork denim, it’s a trend that’s coming in hot for fall! If you’re not sure about it, consider doing it subtly, as we see it in THIS pair of patchwork distressed ankle jeans from Chico’s.

Blazers

Schoolboy Sweater-Blazer (Click HERE for other colors.) | White Knit Camisole (Click HERE for other colors.) | ‘Ab’Solution Distressed Girlfriend Jeans | Similar Snake Print Belt | Western Inspired Booties (Use code SUZY15 for 15% off sitewide.) | Gold Huggie Earrings | Tory Burch Brown Apple Watch Band (Click HERE for other colors.) | Abbie Strand Necklace | Bennett Tennis Necklace | Hestia Necklace

There are two main styles of blazers you’ll be seeing a lot of this season. (And they’re very different from one another!) Choose the one that looks the best on your body type!

There are lots of fabric options like herringbone or faux leather, but the newest is knit! I opted for easy care knit in the well-priced sweater blazer you see on me in the photo above.

Remember! If you see a style you like, be sure to click through to check out the color options!

Oversized

These tend to be less structured and longer. Think 80s throwback, often complete with shoulder pads!

Waisted

These have more shape to them and they may be waist-skimming or hourglass shaped. The well-priced sweater blazer I’m wearing in this post is a great example of this. Another of my favorite blazers in this category is THIS Drape Collar Knit Blazer. (This waist-skimming blazer is an ENB best-seller, so you must love it too!)

Feminine Details

Black Shirtdress (My dress sold out, but THIS one is almost identical.) | Vince Camuto Black Booties (Mine are last year’s version of THESE Vince Camuto booties.) | Gold Huggie Earrings | Tory Burch Black Apple Watch Band (Click HERE for other colors.) | Abbie Strand Necklace | Bennett Tennis Necklace | Hestia Necklace

This is a continuation of the trend that was so big this spring and summer! Think girly ruffles, puff sleeves, and more. If your weather continues to be warm, look for layering pieces that will work under cardigans or sweaters. THIS ruffled tank top from Amazon has become an ideal go-to in my closet. I already own it in four colors (and counting!). I’ll be wearing the green and gold ones for college football game day come September! 💚💛 Click through HERE to see the other color options.

A derivative of the feminine detailing that you’ll be seeing more of in the coming months is scallop trim. If you find a piece you like, scoop it up. Scallops are trending!

I can’t wait to hear what you think about the fall fashion styles! Let me know your thoughts in the comments, okay? Also, if you have any specific questions, let me know those as well!
