Summer 2021 is all about enhancing natural beauty, even through lip and nail colors! If y’all know me, you know I love bright colors, but the mask and WFH situation of 2020 taught even the biggest color-lovers among us to appreciate and embrace natural beauty. Heading into summer this year, people are getting back to normal, going out more, sneaking in a vacation, and trying to stay up with the trends. But they don’t want to forget the things they learned in 2020, so they’re hesitant to give up comfortable clothes, natural makeup, and the ability to slow down.
Today, we’ve rounded up the 10 best nail & lip colors for summer 2021. We did our research, pulled together the trends, and curated it just for you in one convenient spot. 😁 As always, you can click any pink text link or image for more information. Also, look out for the exclusive discount codes just for Empty Nest Blessed readers that we included in this post!
1. Hydrating Lip Balm
The summer heat and humidity can make wearing heavy makeup uncomfortable! Hydrating lip balms are a great choice for summer! They’ll keep your lips feeling fresh and hydrated while giving you that fresh summer glow. As I told you in my post BEAUTY AND THE BEACH | MY BEACH BEAUTY OVER 50 MUST-HAVE PRODUCTS, if I’m looking for SPF lip protection, my favorite products are COOLA’s Mineral Liplux Organic Tinted Lip Balm Sunscreen SPF 30. It goes on like a balm without shine, but it does come in six pretty color options. You can see them all HERE.
If I’m not worried about SPF, my favorite is Burt’s Bees tinted lip balm in either “Hibiscus” or “Red Dahlia.” Both are sheer, so when they’re on, they are not as dark as they appear on the top of the tube.
2. Subtly Enhancing Lip Liner
Even if you love your natural God-given pout, sometimes you may want to play up your features a bit. I get it! If you want to give your lips a plumper look without paying for cosmetic enhancements, wearing a subtly enhancing lip liner is the way to go! Apply it just around your lip line and then smear down into your lips. Then follow up with a similarly colored lipstick. These lip liners will blend in with your natural lip color and help any lip color you apply over them last longer! (Bonus: THIS one is waterproof!)
3. Plumping Gloss
Another way to enhance your lips more naturally is to use a plumping gloss. I love plumping lip gloss so much that I wrote an entire post about my favorite brand! Yep! I’m a fan of City Lips Lip Plumpers from City Beauty. It can be challenging to find the right color for your skin tone online (or even in the drugstore!), but what I like about City Lips is that the website tells you if a certain color has “warm” or “cool” undertones.
So if you know what your skin’s undertones are, you know what shades will work on you! (That makes purchasing almost fool-proof, plus City Beauty‘s 60 Day Money Back Guarantee, of course!) My skin’s undertone is warm, and my favorite shade is “Sun Diego.” It’s pinky, with a slight golden sheen to it. To learn more about the ingredients and how City Lips plumping action works, scroll down on THIS City Lips page and read all about it.
Remember, Empty Nest Blessed readers can get an exclusive 15% discount on your entire City Beauty purchase with the promo code EMPTYNESTBLESSED at checkout.
If you’re not a fan of City Lips, that’s cool too! I’ve linked some other favorites below. Some of these glosses come with an ingredient that actually has a slight tingling and plumping effect, and some of them add a shine to your lips that will catch the light in all the right places — giving you a lovely, plump pout! Aside from City Lips, my favorite brand is Dior Addict Stellar Lip Gloss. My favorite shade is “Princess – Rosy Coral.”
4. Timeless, Natural Pinks
Timeless, natural pink colors are my absolute fav! You know I love wearing bold colors and accessories, so sometimes I just need a pretty, neutral color on my lips. Sometimes I wear these when I’m working at home for a quick pick-me-up, and sometimes I wear them out for a natural makeup look! Chanel’s Le Rouge Duo is the brand I’ve been using lately.
It’s long-wearing, and the color is super-saturated for staying power. When you apply it, you have to do it on clean, makeup-free lips. Then you wait for the color to dry completely before applying the shiny top coat. You can reapply the top coat as needed throughout the day. The shade called Merry Rose (#397) is a great universal slightly-pink neutral that looks good on pretty much everyone. I linked to it at Nordstrom. They always offer free shipping/returns. (Yes, even on makeup!)
5. A Bold Lip
If I am not doing a natural makeup look, I love a bold lip for any season! Summer is such a great time to add in some coral shades or beautiful bursts of color! In a pinch, I always reach for Burt’s Bees Lip Shimmer in Rhubarb. I especially like it if we’re going out to eat because I know it’s 100% natural.
6. Neutral Nails
Neutral nails are my favorite for the summer! Neutral nails allow you to go longer between manicures because a chipped neutral nail doesn’t show as much! That makes them a winner in my book. My favorite neutrals are pale pinks.
If you’ve been hanging around here for a while now, you know that during the pandemic, I started using ManiMe. I wrote an entire post about it called FROM TIPS TO TOES| CUSTOMIZED DIY MANIS & PEDIS I CAN’T STOP RAVING ABOUT! It’s a customized mani/pedi system made with 3D technology specifically for YOUR nails.
You apply it in minutes, with no salon visit, no mess, no chemicals, and no smell! It lasts 10-14 days, with no chipping. Then, when it’s was time to remove it, your manicure peels right off, with no damage to your nails. My favorite shade is called “Venus Shell.” If you’re interested, you can discount code ENB20 to take 20% off your first set of manis. Want to learn more? Click HERE.
If that’s not your thing, no worries! We’ve rounded up some of the best neutral nail colors we could find.
7. Pretty Pastels
Sometimes I love to go just a step up from a neutral nail and sport a pretty pastel color. These are such a great way to add just a pop of color to your nails without attracting too much attention! I just ordered the ManiMe color called “Hot Out Here” for summer. Here are some other sweet summer faves.
8. Citrus Shades
If you decide to go for a bold nail, I love these summery citrus shades! The fruity colors bring out the summery glow in your skin and can add a wonderful pop of color to an outfit! These colors would be super cute on a beach vacation! You could try a ManiMe color like “Mango Lassi” or one of the fruity cuties below!
9. Candy Colors
These candy colors are so bright and fun! They give me all the Lilly Pulitzer vibes, which y’all know I love! The past few weeks, I’ve worn THIS beachy color on my toes since we’ve been at our place on Sanibel Island. A great ManiMe choice would be “Parasol,” or you can click through and check out one of our other choices below.
10. Shimmer & Shine
In the summer, I love love love to add just a touch of sparkle to my nails. The shimmery ones are super cute on their own, and the glossy top coat can help bring out any base coat color! I just ordered “Sugar Rush” from ManiMe, but if you prefer a traditional polish, try one of these.
I don’t know about you, but I can tend to get into a nail and lip rut, where I wear the same shades repeatedly. Summer is a great, safe time to shake things up a little bit, and a new lip or nail color is a fun, inexpensive way to do that. I hope we gave you some new ideas today!
