As we round the corner into spring, one trend from 2020 is here to stay: comfort! After a year of staying in, we realized that slippers could be worn outside the house, flats are GOOD, and “trendy” can sometimes mean encasing your feet in fur (Use code ENB15 for 15% off these.)! While we’re ready to dress to impress after being bored in the house (and in the house bored) for too long, we’re not ready to give up all of that comfort just yet.

Spring and Summer Shoe Styles: Trends
In the 2021 Spring & Summer Style Guide post, I told you to look for washed-out pastels to be replaced by bolder colors or newer neutrals.
- Vibrant colors (these flats come in SO many!)
- Soft colors (especially blush, which is the newest neutral)
- Blue (often chambray)
- Rose gold and other metallics (also considered a neutral)
Exploring different textures is trendy this season, and I’m excited about that!
- Raffia, I think playing with different materials can really elevate any shoe!
- Quilted (We saw this trend start in the fall, and it’s huge this spring!)
Watch for shoes with fun prints like
This year, look for fun detailing to add interest to shoes that are otherwise fairly simple.
Spring and Summer Shoe Styles
I am dancing for joy over this most popular trend this year! Ballet flats are back, with a twist! Popular styles I’m seeing include two-toned ballet flats, pastels, and ballet flats with cut-out designs. Rounded toes are making their way out, being replaced by square and pointed toes.
Suzy’s Style Tip: Ballet flats travel well! If you’re planning a vacation, pack these in your suitcase to elevate your dinner outfit instead of clunky, heavy heels. They’re flexible, versatile, and packable, making them the perfect addition to any daytime or evening attire.
Last year Birkenstocks officially became the cool kid’s sporty sandal! Look for them in beautiful metallic leather. This year they’re joined by Chaco’s and a Jambu, a newer brand that makes shoes and sandals specially designed to encourage outdoor adventure! (Take 20% off at Jambu with code ENBS21.)
Suzy’s Style Tip: Never, never, never wear these with socks! ???? #nerdalert ????
Move over, mules! Loafers are gaining popularity alongside our lovable mules. They are so classic and comfortable! Loafers and clothing with chain detailing are still big, right on trend to match the ever-stylish chain purses.
Suzy’s Style Tip: If you love loafers, that’s awesome, but know that it might be time for an update! Choose a trendy, updated style that says “I’m a chic professional.” and doesn’t look outdated and matronly.
The detail in quilted shoes truly adds that extra spice, even if you’re into more neutral colors. Show your feminine side with pretty quilting. You will see this trend everywhere, in all different variations—not just shoes—so get ready for quilted purses in my accessories post this Friday!
Beautiful woven braided designs add style and dimension without changing the function or color of the shoe.
Printed & Patterned Sneakers
Yep! We’re all about comfort now! Pretty much anything you wear can be paired with sneakers, from dresses to high-waisted wide-leg cropped denim! Sneakers with cute patterns & prints like snakeskin, leopard, camo, gingham, and other fun designs are a great way to upgrade a casual outfit!
Suzy’s Style Tip: If you’re more comfortable in neutral clothes, try some patterned shoes to add a bit of whimsy to your look.
Suzy’s Style Tip: The higher up on the foot the straps go, the more secure they’ll feel.
Ankle Strap Sandals
If slides don’t seem as secure as you want them to be, opt for ankle strap sandals! They’re a little dressier. Also, note that ankle straps don’t always have to go around the ankle. Look for slingbacks or other straps that will help keep your shoes securely fastened!
Suzy’s Style Tip: Avoid flats with ankle straps if you are petite! They can cut off the leg line. Instead, opt for platforms to add that bit of extra height!
Short and chunky heels are more stable, comfortable, and easy to walk in. Midlife women, rejoice! ????
Suzy’s Style Tip: Pair these with jeans to instantly dress them up.
Denim (Chambray) & Blue Shoes
This trend took me by surprise! But as I was pulling examples of the other trends, I kept finding blue shoes in every style! So much so that I decided it qualified as a true trend! If you’re a blue lover, this is your year!
Spring and Summer Shoe Styles You Can Still Wear
Suzy’s Style Tip: You’ll also see lots of knockoffs of the super-expensive-for-what-they-are Golden Goose Star sneakers. I’m partial to these by Sole Bliss! Designed in Britain and handcrafted in Italy, they’re made for women with foot issues like wide feet, bunions, and plantar fasciitis. They’re the ones favored by the future queen of England and lots of celebrities you know. Take 15% off any Sole Bliss purchase with the code ENB15.
I wore these all last summer when I had a stress fracture in my foot! They felt great because they typically have a platform and don’t bend at the sole.
These are the quintessential summer shoes! Some people love them, and some don’t! They typically feature a flat sole that doesn’t bend with your foot.
Shoes Styles to Skip This Year:
- Huge chunky platform sneakers…these are being replaced by retro 80s inspired sneakers (thank goodness, because that’s an ankle sprain just waiting to happen!)
- Gladiator sandals and extra strappy sandals.
- Skinny stilettos (Although you will see the kitten heel.)
The spring & summer shoe styles are so wearable this year, and I, for one, am not complaining! Most of us may still feel safer buying shoes online, so we favored brands that offer free shipping/returns to make things easy for you.
I hope you learned a lot! I learned that I need to upgrade my shoe game this season! I may never turn into a Birkenstock girl, but I’m going to grab some slides and also use my 15% off ENB15 discount code to snag these fun star sneakers! I already own these with animal print detailing and wore them on repeat all winter! They feel so good on my feet!) What styles do you love? Let me know in the comments, okay?
