This year, we are so ready to trade in lounge sets for midi dresses, Zoom calls for coffee shop catch-ups, and Netflix for movie theaters and popcorn! It’s time to refresh our wardrobes and our hearts and minds to embrace the new season! I’m excited to kick off our big Empty Nest Blessed Spring & Summer Style week today! We’ll be sharing the top trends for spring and summer 2021, and I’ll be telling you how to style them.
We’re approaching spring with feelings of hope for brighter days to come. As more people are signing up for their vaccines (I got my first one on Sunday!) and distributions keep rolling, normality seems closer now than ever before. The spring and summer styles I’m sharing with you are inspired by dreams of travel to beautiful destinations and an urge to escape the ordinary with bright colors, patterns, and styles.
As usual, all of the pink text links and images in this post (including the collage) are clickable for more information, to view size and color options, and to shop.
When you’re a style trend-watcher like I am, you notice one thing that never changes from year to year: Style reflects the time we live in, and to some extent, society’s current feelings in general. As we slowly emerge from a year where we spent a lot more time at home than ever before, look for these general trends:
- Loungewear was great, but we’re ready to get dressed again!
- We want kinder, gentler silhouettes that are easy to wear.
- We want softer, looser tailoring.
- We may be emerging from quarantine, but remote working and Zoom are here to stay. We want everything above the waist to look interesting.
Spring & Summer Style: Colors and Patterns
It’s all about PINK this year, and I love it, of course! Bubblegum Pink is especially popular. It was all over the runways, and it’s everywhere in stores and online! Bubblegum pink, and other more vibrant colors, are replacing pastels for a brighter feel.
Take your tie-dye to the next level and upgrade your lounge sets to a cute dress or sweater (although matching tie-dye sets are still popular)! Think about more abstract tie-dye and ombré, as opposed to a classic spiral pattern.
Fun florals are here again!
Suzy’s Style Tip: If you aren’t comfortable with brightly colored florals, consider adding a solid blazer, denim jacket, or neutral accessories to tone it down a little or opting for an embroidered floral that doesn’t cover the entire piece.
Spring and Summer Style: Trends
In general, look for these spring & summer style silhouette shifts:
- Tops: Shorter. Sometimes these are called “crop.” Don’t panic????, ladies! It doesn’t necessarily mean you have to show skin. These are meant to be worn untucked, with high-waisted bottoms.
- Pants: High-waisted, fuller legs.
- Dresses: Looser and Midi length.
By now, I know you’re catching on to the huge sleeve trend! I have news for you…it’s not going anywhere! This trend became popular last year and is only getting bigger and bigger. (Like, literally!) Keep an eye out for puff sleeves, bell sleeves, and balloon sleeves. You’ll also see a new take on shoulder pads that helps the puff in the puffy sleeves stay perky! (Example I own HERE.)
Suzy’s Style Tip: Aim for a subtle look with a smaller puff or sleeve so you don’t get overpowered. As my 24-year-old daughter said when I tried on a top with a big puffy sleeve the other day, “You look like your shirt is eating you.” ????
We saw ruffles emerge last year as a trend, and they’re still everywhere. When it comes to this year’s spring & summer styles, there’s still plenty of big ruffles out there, but the newest ruffles are tiny and placed at the neckline and/or the bottom of the sleeve. (Use code ENB15 for 15% off on that top.) You’ll also see lots of large ruffles at the hemline.
Polo Tops and Statement Collars
High-Waisted Wide, Straight & Flared Pants
If you’re looking for one primary way to update your wardrobe this spring & summer, this is it: Buy high-waisted shorts, pants, and jeans. Look for wide legs and flared jeans and crops right now! (Most of them are ankle length.)
The skinny jean isn’t gone, but the newer “skinny jean” is the girlfriend jean. True to the style of comfort, the girlfriend jean is more figure-flattering than wide-leg pants and more comfortable than skinny jeans. They’re the perfect in-between!
Suzy’s Style Tip: Look for pants that are high-waisted and still fitted at the top to avoid a look that’s too baggy!
Tiered & Loose Dresses
Amazon’s Boho-style housedress was THE dress of the season last year, and it sold out over and over again! It’ll be hot again!
Suzy’s Style Tip: If you didn’t get one last summer, do it now while sizes and patterns are plentiful!
Tiered dresses Easy-breezy tiered dresses (sometimes unflatteringly called “tent dresses” ????) are also big this year for spring & summer. They’re everywhere!
We covered the major spring & summer style trends that I think are the most wearable for women over 50! I hope you learned a lot! The great thing about being our age is that, by now, we know what works on our bodies and what doesn’t. The styles are easy to wear this year! That said, know your body and skip any styles that you don’t feel good wearing! (If you’re not sure, ask yourself if wearing it would embarrass your kids! ????????)
It’s true that when you look your best, you feel your best! What you wear can influence your mood and reflect how you feel. Bright colors and vibrant patterns create light and happy feelings, which we could all use now during this final stretch of the pandemic! I hope you found styles here that sparked joy and encouraged positivity. Let’s finish strong and stay hopeful as we close out these tough times!
Be sure to check out the boutique at the bottom of this post with lots of examples of what we’ve shared today! If you see something you like, you might want to go ahead and get it! Things were selling out like crazy as I put together this post!
