Once a month, I open up, give you a life update, and share my heart with you. I wish I could sit down and have coffee with each one of you, and we could have a good long chat in person. This is the next best thing! So, in the spirit of those old SNL “Coffee Talk” skits with Mike Myers as Linda Richman, let’s have cawfee, and let’s tawk! Here’s what’s on my heart this month.
It’s been a busy August for this empty nest blogger 😊, and my inbox is full of messages from sweet new empty nesters who are having a rough time. My heart goes out to them! If you know someone who is a new empty nester this year, I would love it if you would tell them about Empty Nest Blessed! If they subscribe to my email list right now they’ll get a free copy of my article How to Adjust to the Empty Nest. I’ve also got lots of encouraging past posts about all aspects of life as an empty nester on the website, so feel free to send them right HERE to explore. When you recommend Empty Nest Blessed to others, it means so much to me!
Let’s chat, shall we? Here’s what is on my mind and in my heart this month.
Happy Birthday to Me!
I celebrated a birthday last Tuesday, and it was great! Thanks so much for all of your sweet messages and DMs on social media. They made my day extra special!
Somebody asked me on Instagram how I was spent my birthday, and I thought y’all might be curious too! So at the risk of boring you to tears, here it is! I got up at 5:30 a.m. and by 7 a.m. I was at my makeup artist Bebe’s salon to get my makeup done for a photo shoot that morning. I don’t always get my makeup done for photo shoots—sometimes I do my own—but I decided since it was my birthday and all, I would treat myself! 💟 Here’s a little selfie Bebe took before I left!
(I know by now that I have to link everything for y’all! Otherwise, the emails start rolling in fast! 😂 I’m so grateful! When you shop with my links, it helps me keep Empty Nest Blessed going!)
At 8 a.m. I met with my photographer, Megan, and we shot seven outfits, which took about 2½ hours. Then Bob and I went to lunch at Bazille. (Their Cilantro Lime Shrimp 🍤 Salad is delish!) Then I came home, took a nap and worked a little bit. Bob came home early, took me to my favorite spot for dinner (LOL), and then we went to a preview screening of a new movie. In between all of that, I got lots of sweet wishes from family and friends, and that meant so much! It was a perfect day! Wanna know what Bob got me for my Birthday? A giant tin of my favorite caramel popcorn!
Speaking of The Movie…
A couple of weeks ago, a PR rep reached out to me to invite me to a preview screening of the new movie, Where’d You Go, Bernadette? Based on the bestselling book of the same title, it’s the story of an eccentric but loving mother who loses herself (both literally and figuratively) in raising her daughter. When she’s faced with the impending empty nest, she disappears (both literally and figuratively), and in the process finds herself once again. I don’t want to give too much away, but I will tell you that Bernadette is not a likable woman, but by the end of the movie, you will see yourself in her—in the very best way possible. This movie will inspire you to reconnect with the woman you were and the things that brought you joy, even before your kids came into your life. I think you’ll love it. 💗
What’s Coming Up
I took to my Instastory about two weeks ago to ask my followers what they wanted me to write about in the coming weeks. I was overwhelmed by the number of answers! Thank you so much for that! It was so helpful. I want to create content that blesses, encourages, and inspires you, and telling me what you want to hear let’s me know for sure I’m sharing helpful information with you! Based on your answers, here are some things I’m planning to write about in the coming weeks.
- Empty Nester Bedroom Redo Reveal (Yes, finally! Y’all have been very patient! Thank you. 😘)
- How I Style My Curly Hair (I get questions about it constantly, so I’ll be sharing the how-tos as well as all of the products I use.

My big project for next week is the Fall Fashion Preview! It takes a long time to put together, but I cannot wait to share it with you. You are going to love (most of) the trends this fall! I’m going to do my best to make sure you know what to buy and what to skip this Fall.
One thing that helped me prep for that post was to spend an afternoon with my pal Jacob Horton, who works as my stylist sometimes. I’m a big believer in working with experts when you need to, and the time I’ve spent working with Jacob has been so educational. He does everything from style consulting and personal shopping to closet cleaning. Last week we did a whole try-on session at WHBM, which I documented on my Instastory. To check it out, you can go to my profile page on Instagram, and tap the WHBM Try-On highlight button. I’ll be sharing some of the looks I tried on in the Fall Fashion Preview post, but here’s a little sneak peek. (Please excuse the photo quality!)
Polka dots are a big trend this year, and we’re seeing them everywhere from dresses to tops and more. Also, you need to know that one of the big colors for fall is gold. (WHBM calls it Honey Citrine 😂.) I adore this color, but I know that not everyone does. The solution? Use it in your accessories, as I did in this look. (I love gold so much that I ordered the Grommet Trim Shell top the girl behind me is wearing in this photo!)
This cardigan was so soft and I loved the way it draped! Jacob had me pair it with high-rise coated skinny jeans, and snake accessories. You’ll continue to see leopard this fall and winter, but look for snake to be a fresher and newer look. I love these peep-toe snake & suede pumps!
I bought this snake cardigan on the spot and I think I’m going to wear it constantly this fall! I loved how Jacob had me pile on the snake accessories with an otherwise simple look underneath.
The maxi dress isn’t going away anytime soon, and I’m so happy about that! Aren’t you? For an ultra-flattering way to wear it, go with the high-low hemline. Jacob told me it looks good on pretty much every single body type!
Like it or not, bustiers are big this year. This one is a coated Ponte knit and Jacob “cut down” on the sexiness factor by layering it over a crisp and classic button-down. I bought the classic shirt, but passed on the bustier! 😁
Check Out My Amazon Page!
I didn’t write a Back-to-College post this year as I have in the past. I guess I just got busy with other things! Instead, I curated a special section right on the Empty Nest Blessed Amazon page that has a selection of some great Back-to-School Essentials. My assistant, Heidi, is starting college this fall (I am going to miss her! 😥), and she was a huge help in putting this list together! While you’re there, be sure to check out the Travel Essentials section too. Y’all know I traveled a ton this summer, and I’ve put lots of my must-haves for travel on that list. I hope you find it helpful! ***Note: You can read my comments about each item by clicking the little square box to the top right of each image. To learn more about each item, click on the image itself.***
Thanks for having coffee and chatting with me! I hope you had a good weekend! If you saw my Instagram, you know I headed out to Florida yesterday to spend some time at our beach condo and hang out with my parents, who live nearby. Be sure to watch my Instastory this week for some BTS (behind-the-scenes) snaps!
