Sometimes a well-placed accessory is all you really need to update your look! Today we’re looking at the 2019 spring & summer accessory trends you need to know to do just that.
I hope you enjoyed my 2019 Spring & Summer Style Preview post earlier this week! If you haven’t checked it out yet, you might want to because you’ll see a lot of the general style trends we talked about there also reflected in the accessories in this post. As always, click the pink links or any of the images for more information or to shop. (The collage at the top of the post is also clickable.)
Finally, Thanks so much for your feedback after Monday’s post! Several of you said that you appreciated all the options but were having trouble narrowing down your choices in each of the trend categories. I get that! Too many choices can be overwhelming! You wanted to know my favorites. (So sweet!) So I’ve added “Suzy’s Pick” to each category. I’ll tell you which option is my favorite and why. I hope you find it helpful!
Okay! Let’s dive right in, shall we?
Spring & Summer Accessory Trends: General Trends
Watch for lots of circles this year in accessories and embellishments. You’ll see lots of circle and half-circle earrings, and the trend is huge in handbags as well. Look for circle bags, circle and loop handles, and even half-circle bags.
Suzy’s Pick: For the money and the fun pop of color, I like this under $30 option from Old Navy.
Look for lots of tortoise accessories this year! From sandals and pretty pumps to bags, clutches, and jewelry of all types, this is a trend worth investing in because we’ll see it going into fall and winter too.
Suzy’s Pick: I love this structured white box bag with the circle embellishments in tortoise! #threetrendsinonebag I haven’t seen it in person, so I can’t vouch for the quality, but shipping/returns are free, so there’s no risk!
Spring & Summer Accessory Trends: Handbags
I can virtually guarantee that you’ll find a handbag trend you like this year! They’re all over the map, but the good news is, they’re all so chic!
Belt Bags & Lanyard Bags
I told you in no uncertain terms what I thought of the resurgence of the “fanny pack” trend in my February SO in the KNOW post. I also told you about the new (ridiculous) way that some people are wearing the “fanny pack.”
Also, I can’t tell you how I know this, but trust me: if you derisively call these bags “fanny packs” in front of your millennial daughter, eyes will be rolled and you will be corrected.
The newest look is the lanyard bag. It will fit your phone, your ID, and a couple of credit cards. Pretty cool. #handsfreebaby
Suzy’s Pick: I’m skipping the “belt bag” trend, but the lanyard bag is cute! I like this one.
In a fun juxtaposition to all of the circle bags out there, the box bag is perfect if you like a more structured look.
Suzy’s Pick: I like the clean lines of these! This one is my favorite because of its interesting shape.
This trend is so modern and cool! If you buy a new handbag this year, make sure it incorporates a circle somewhere!
Suzy’s Pick: MIne in the photo below is under $35! It was a great deal last year, and they actually lowered the price when they restocked it!
This is the rattan circle bag I bought last year. The quality is good, and at only $34 with free shipping, it’s less expensive than most of the similar bags out there.
In a throwback to our childhoods, crochet bags are going to be big this year. If you’re a DIYer (I’m SO not!), head on over to Pinterest and put “crochet handbags” into the search engine. There are approximately 1.3 million results that will come up. There. That should keep you nice and busy until the weather actually gets warm enough to carry your groovy new bag. 🙂
Suzy’s Pick: Honestly, these aren’t really my style, but I like this one the best.
Half-Circle (AKA Half-Moon)
For an on-point look that’s young and fun, look for a bag with a loop handle. You can find them in leather, rattan, or even croc-embossed.
Suzy’s Pick: This one is my fave, because it incorporates a big trend in shoes this year: braided/woven leather.
If you want a classic bag that will take you into fall, opt for an all-tortoise bag, or one with tortoise trim.
Suzy’s Pick: The beaded top handle on this bag makes it so ladylike, and it’s on sale for under $20, so it’s my pick in this category.
You can find clear bags in almost any shape and size and at any price range. I bought this clear bag to take to college football games at my alma mater. The quality is incredible! It comes with pretty python trim and is available in lots of school colors. Click here to see them all.
Suzy’s Pick: I love I already own, but it’s hard to resist this monogrammed circle bag because it’s so unique!
Other Notable Handbag Trends
- Silver bags
- Lime green bags
- Clamshell clasps (Like grandma used to have!)
- Micro-mini bags
- Top Handle bags
- Croc-Embossed skin
- Duffle handbags

Spring & Summer Accessory Trends: Jewelry
Layer up, y’all! Either layer several of your own or look for some that are pre-layered for you. (Pre-layered! Hahaha! Suzy made up a new term!) Whichever you do, be sure to incorporate the of-the-moment trends like pearls and charms.
Suzy’s Pick: I love this pearl pendant layered necklace. It’s under $30.
This happy trend emerged last year, but this year you’ll see it everywhere! Incorporate multi-colored gems, tassels, or even shells into your existing wardrobe to bring the fun to an otherwise simple or neutral outfit. (Oh, you know your girl Suzy is all about this trend!)
Suzy’s Pick: These stack rings are Baublebar bestsellers, and it’s easy to see why!
Shells & Pearls
We’re not talking about your mama’s simple strand of pearls here! Look for pearls, shells, abalone, and mother of pearl out there in fresh, new ways.
Suzy’s Pick: Kendra Scott for the win! I love this classy mother of pearl pendant necklace with the beaded tassel.
Stackable rings are still a hot trend, but this year look for signet rings to add an element of surprise into an otherwise lightweight warm-weather look. You can wear signet rings on any finger and add your monogram, an inspirational saying, or just wear a beautifully simple one in a unique color or geometric design. (Also, the mood ring is back!!!) #yes #alldaylong
Suzy’s Pick: No surprise here! I love this monogrammed signet ring, but I’d get it in pink. (Also no surprise! Hahaha!)
This jewelry trend will elevate an otherwise casual summer outfit and make it special. (It’s also great for the office.)
Suzy’s Pick: These sweet earrings had me at hello.
Spring & Summer Accessory Trends: Everything Else
The must-have classic beach accessory is the straw hat. It’ll never go out of style! But if you’re into hats even when you’re not in the sand, this year’s hot looks are the baker boy cap and the bucket hat. You’ll see lots of millennials rocking these looks.
Suzy’s Pick: I’m sticking with straw, but hey, you do you. 🙂
I hate to break it to you scarf lovers, but the big ole’ scarf is being replaced by the feminine neckerchief. It’s baaaaack! #everythingoldisnewagain
Neckerchiefs (Neckerchieves??? Hahahaha)
Also called a “kerchief,” “bandana,” or “skinny scarf,” this pretty trend is great for women over fifty because it camouflages those pesky neck wrinkles. #buyoneofthese #forsure
Suzy’s Pick: J.Crew’s collaboration with Liberty prints resulted in some of the cutest scarves I’ve seen in awhile! I love this one.
Sunglasses with sharp, angular shapes are the thing this year. (The cat-eye is still big too.) If you’re in the market for a new pair of sunnies, I’d look for some that aren’t too angular in tortoise.
Suzy’s Pick: Skipping this trend and sticking with the oversize Tory Burch shades I’ve been wearing for about three years now. 🙂
Go forth and accessorize, my pretties! I hope you learned a lot from this post and you found it helpful! Let me know in the comments what you loved and what you’ll be skipping this year.
