Once a month I open up, give you a life update, and share my heart with you. I wish I could sit down and have coffee with each one of you, and we could have a good long chat in person. This is the next best thing! So, in the spirit of those old SNL “Coffee Talk” skits with Mike Myers as Linda Richman, let’s have cawfee, and let’s tawk! Here’s what’s on my heart this month.
Whew! Is it just me, or is this month flying by fast? Things have been bopping in our empty nest, with Becca coming back to Dallas for auditions most weekends and us traveling out of town for meetings. We’ve also been busy getting ready for Bob’s hip replacement surgery next month. (Oh, there are classes you have to attend!!!) He has a degenerative hip, and we’ve known for years that he would eventually need to have the surgery, but doctors encourage you to wait as long as you can. Well, it’s time. We’ve been remodeling/redecorating our master bedroom, trying to get everything finished up before his surgery, and that project has been fun but time-consuming! (Lots of people in and out…) I’m sharing some iPhone snaps of the fabrics we’re using in a little collage below!
If you read Empty Nest Blessed often, you’ve probably noticed that the photos I’ve been sharing for the past month or so were all taken in and around our home! I did that as a way to fulfill one of my New Year’s Resolutions, which was to open up and share more of my life with you all. True to form, I’ve jumped in with both feet, sharing everything from the health issues I struggle with every day to my everyday morning routine. I hope you’ve enjoyed seeing more of our house and learning more about me! 🙂
By far, the biggest thing that happened this month was the FREE Makeup Class for Women Over Fifty that I hosted in Dallas last week! I was so honored to meet everyone who attended, and we had the best time! People came from all over Texas and even out of state to participate, which just amazed me! I hope to share a full wrap up on the blog next week, complete with lots of photos, makeup tips, and product recommendations.
I took to my Instagram stories earlier this week asking for your questions! I told you that you could ask me anything. Thank you for your response! (Honestly, I was a little afraid no one would care, and I would have to make up questions! Hahaha!)
In order to keep things all nice and organized, I divided your questions into two categories. Some of them were about Empty Nest Blessed, and some were more personal, which was awesome! Let’s dive in, shall we?
Empty Nest Blessed Questions
Hi Debra! Thanks for this question. I love my job so much. Like, so much that I lay awake at night thinking and praying about what to share with y’all. So that makes this a hard question! I guess the answer would have to be that it’s just me. Sometimes I need someone to bounce things off of or help me with an idea, and that’s when it feels kinda lonely! I wear lots of hats at Empty Nest Blessed, and I’m in a business where the doors are open 24/7. I can write the best post in the world, but if I don’t push it out in a newsletter to my email subscribers, and on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Pinterest, no one will even know it exists! I take a lot of time to Post, Pin, Tweet, and interact with followers on social media. It’s so important to me to do that!
Last month I told you about hiring an assistant, and she has been such a blessing. She’s mostly been helping manage my social media, but I have lots of other things I’d love to get her involved in doing. (She’s so smart and talented!) Today, we’re scheduled to have a phone chat, so I’m going to talk to her about some of the things I’d like to do in the future, and see if she’d be willing to add more hours and help me out with them. Honestly, it just encourages my heart to have someone else that I can talk to about all things Empty Nest Blessed!
Hey, Laura! Thanks for this question! Probably about 55-60 hours a week. It’s essential to me to be faithful to my mission to bless and encourage empty nesters with quality content on a wide range of topics—and that takes time! I want everything on Empty Nest Blessed to be as beautiful and excellent as I can make it—because y’all are worth it.
Lydia, thanks for this question! I would love to vlog on YouTube, among other things, but unfortunately, there are no plans to do that right now! There are so many things I’d love to do on Empty Nest Blessed! I’d love to have a permanent gift guide on my site that y’all could utilize all year long; I’d love to put out more posts; I’d love to do a better job with Pinterest; etc. I am working on adding some things! Stay tuned and please pray for me to do a good job living out my priorities and managing my time. It’s so important to me to do my job with excellence but not at the expense of living a balanced and healthy life!
How would you like to see me expand and grow Empty Nest Blessed? I’d love your input on this! Leave me a comment and let me know, okay?
Hi Kattia! I’m not sure I am, but I have read lots of articles and blog posts about using social media. Also, I am an excellent “Googler,” if I do say so myself! I Google everything!
This was such a sweet question! So many things bring me joy, but I had to make myself think hard about the difference between joy and happiness as I considered my answer. I mean, hot baths make me happy, but joy is on a whole other level, right? I think what brings me the most joy right now is seeing the wonderful adults my kids are becoming. It’s such a privilege when they invite me into their lives to share victories, frustrations, and ideas with me. (Also, I like it when they ask me for advice!!!)
Thanks for asking, Kris! I’m 5’5″. I think sometimes I look taller in my photos because my photographer tends to shoot from lower and shoot up toward me. (That’s actually a good photo tip! To look taller and slimmer, shoot from below.) There were a few months there where I think every tall woman’s clothing brand was reaching out to me and asking me to collaborate! Hahaha!
Hey, Melanie! What a fun question! Honestly, I think I’d lounge in bed and catch up on shows I like. And then I’d take a long bath and a nap. Then I’d read. (You can always see what I’m currently reading in the right sidebar on my website, or if you’re on mobile, just keep scrolling and scrolling until you get to the spot where it says, “What I’m Reading.” Right now I’m reading this book, and I adore it!)
Hey, Brenda! I’ve been called a lot of things, but shy is not one of them! 🙂

With all of the Valentine’s Day hoopla, I almost forgot that President’s Day is on Monday, making this is a long weekend for some people! I hope you have fun plans! Bob and I are going to spend this weekend getting our master bedroom ready for new carpet and paint. (Happening next week!) We’ve gotta get everything off the floor and the tops of all the furniture. Watch my Instastory next week for BTS footage of all that excitement. Hahaha!
