Once a month I open up, give you a life update, and share my heart with you. I wish I could sit down and have coffee with each one of you, and we could have a good long chat in person. This is the next best thing! So, In the spirit of those old SNL “Coffee Talk” skits with Mike Myers as Linda Richman, let’s have cawfee, and let’s tawk! Here’s what’s on my heart this month.
Today, I’m sharing everything from what took me by surprise this holiday season to my thoughts on Instagram. I’m also introducing you to my new assistant, talking about what I post and why, and I’m making a BIG announcement! Let’s jump right in, shall we?
I hope you guys loved your holidays! I heard from lots of you that your nests were full, and from others who struggled with nests that weren’t as full as they’d wanted them to be. I get that. We had our oldest son here, and our youngest daughter, but our married middle and his sweet wife were with her parents in Arizona. (Although we did get to dog sit the grandpuppy, which was such fun!) We were so happy for her parents that they got to have them because Sarah is an only child and it was so special that they all got to be together this year. As happy as we were for them, though, we really missed them! I think I’d underestimated how much it would change the dynamics of everything to have them gone. It was much tougher than I thought.
Our 22-year-old college senior daughter is still home! (PSA: Attention colleges and universities nationwide! One entire month is a little long, dontcha think?) Oh, don’t get me wrong, we’ve loved having her here, but it’s time. 🙂 Becca is an acting/musical theater major, and she’s been working so hard throughout her Christmas break on finishing her website, setting up auditions, snagging interviews with agents, and taking classes. She goes back on Saturday, and she and I are going to spend this afternoon and Friday afternoon filming video auditions she needs to submit. Check my Instastory for some BTS footage! #theatermomlife
Several people have told me they want to get better at Instagram in 2019 because they know their kids use it and they’d like to understand better how it works. If you haven’t jumped on the Instagram train yet, I hope you’ll think about it, because it’s the fastest growing social media platform by far! Last year (It seems so funny to say that when last year was just two weeks ago!), I wrote a post called How to Master Instagram that can teach you all of the basics if you’re interested in starting or learning more about the platform. If you’ve got the basics down, and you want to learn more about Instastories, you might like this post. Come on! You can do it!
In my New Years Resolution post, I told you all that Bob was encouraging me to hire an assistant to help with some of the things here at Empty Nest Blessed. I feel like I say this all the time, but the main thing I want to do is to create content that is helpful and inspirational to you so that Empty Nest Blessed encourages and blesses you. As things have grown (for which I am incredibly grateful!), it’s become difficult for me to keep up with everything as well as I’d like to. Enter beautiful Emily! This smart and precious girl is one of my daughter’s best friends. She just graduated (in 3½ years, no less) from the University of Oklahoma with a double major in Ballet Performance and Journalism. (WHAT???!!!) She is the answer to my prayers because she really “gets” my mission here at Empty Nest Blessed, and she’s going to help free up my time, allowing me to spend more time interacting with you all, writing posts that are meaningful and significant to you, and producing content on social media that is valuable and fun too. Y’all, I adore this girl! She’s got big things going in her own life, so she’ll only be helping me for about an hour a day, but lemme tell, it is such a gift to me to have someone to come alongside me!
Empty Nest Blessed
Just like most of you, I get all revved up at the start of a new year! I spent a lot of time in December and over the holidays thinking and praying about what to cover on Empty Nest Blessed this month and next. It helps me so much when you ask me to cover specific topics because I figure for every one of you that asks, multiple others are thinking about the same things! (So please keep it coming.) I thought you might like to know what my most popular posts and the most viewed pages on my website were for 2018. (Most of them have gone viral on Pinterest, and that accounts for their popularity!) Here they are, in order:
- The Empty Nest Blessed homepage
- Lash Lift & Tint Review | What it is & Why I did it
- Fitness Over Fifty: Five Exercises Everyone Over Fifty Should be Doing
- How to Pray for Your Adult Kids | Six Bible Verses to Use
- Gift Ideas for Teen & Young Adult Kids (From my Holiday Gift Guide!)
- Five Midlife Makeup Mistakes You May be Making (And How to Fix Them)
- The Ten Best Beauty Tips for Women Over Fifty
- Melt-Proof Makeup | My Review of the Best Waterproof Makeup
- The Empty Nest Category (That’s the section of my website with all of the posts I’ve tagged as related to the empty nest in some form or fashion.)
- Six Ways to Show Love to your Adult Children
As you can see, my beauty posts are some of my most read posts! In January, I feel like there’s lots of information about health & fitness out there, as we all think about setting goals and taking better care of ourselves. But, based on what I know in my own life, and what I hear from you on email and DMs, skin care is a huge issue for us as aging women! So I wanted to spend some significant time on that this month and next. That’s what prompted me to write my Winter Skin Rescue post. (I hope you found it helpful!) There’s more to come on skincare in the coming weeks!
A BIG ANNOUNCEMENT!!!
As I shared my New Year Resolution post, one of the things I want to do this year is to share more of my life with you, and get to know you better! On Thursday, February 7, I’m so excited to announce that I’ll be hosting a FREE Makeup Class for Women Over Fifty, taught by my makeup artist Bebe Tran, of B-Lashed Beauty & Bridal Bar! It will take place at her beautiful studio here in Dallas from 7-9 p.m. In order to do her very best with the class, Bebe has asked that the actual class itself be kept to 12 people max, but there’s room for lots of us to watch and learn as she teaches! In addition to the makeup class, there will be opportunities to shop with some of the vendors I’ve featured right here on Empty Nest Blessed, like Joy Creative Shop and Soul Stonz. Well-known Dallas photographer, David Loi will be taking photos of our event. There will be opportunities to meet and take photos with me, enjoy refreshments, shop, meet people that I’ve featured on the blog, and maybe even win a great prize in our raffle. (Also, negotiations are still in process, but I’m hoping that Bob might come and make a special appearance! Hahahaha!) Interested? Check your calendar, and save the date. More details will be coming out in the coming weeks!
Beginning on Friday, January 18, I’ll be running a contest right here on Empty Nest Blessed to select the 12 lucky participants for the makeup class. If you’re not already on my email list, this would be a good time to sign up because I don’t want you to miss any of the details on this special event! I. CANNOT. WAIT. 🙂
The cute red tunic I’m wearing in the photo at the top of this post is the same one I’m wearing in a different color in this photo! I’m so in love with the flattering drape (and the unbelievable price point) of this tunic! It’s so soft, it honestly feels like pajamas! The red is sold out almost everywhere, but I did manage to find the tunic in several other colors with limited size availability at various prices. It runs big, so consider ordering a size down from the size you would normally wear.
I’ve styled it here with my faux-leather leggings in bronze. (They were one of the best-sellers of the holiday season and they’re sold out almost everywhere, but I managed to find them—with free shipping!) My neutral and easy-to-walk-in Tom’s booties are last year’s perforated version, and I’ve linked to this year’s non-perforated style.
Coming up on Friday, I’ll be sharing my organizational system, telling you what guides me as I make time-related decisions, and giving you my best tips for living out your priorities in a real and authentic way.
