I hope your week is going well! I’m breathing a huge sigh of relief now that the Empty Nest Blessed Holiday Gift Guide is out and all public and everything! With around 500 items on it (some are in multiple categories), I know it’s a lot to get through, but I hope you’re enjoying browsing and shopping at your leisure. I’m so grateful to you for shopping with me! Thank you! After spending all last week on Holiday Prep, I’m thrilled to share this post with you, because I’ve been thinking about it for some time now. 🙂
Back in August, I told you about the fall fashion trends you should watch for this year, along with the fall accessory and shoe trends. It’s so funny, y’all, because every year when I do those posts, I get kind of feisty and start thinking to myself, “Oh, I covered them all this year. I was really thorough. Yay!” And then, sure enough, every year, a few trends come along and surprise me! (Yeah…pride goeth, and all that jazz…) #shegotoverconfident #again
This year three fall trends came along and took me totally by surprise! The greatest things about them? They’re all easy to incorporate into your existing wardrobe and can be worn by women at any age, stage, or size. (Pause for a virtual high five from me!) I’m running them down for you today.
1. Striped Sweaters
Of the three fall trends that caught me by surprise, the striped sweater trend was maybe the one I was most excited about trying. I found this adorable under $40 striped sweater and knew I’d hit the jackpot! The sweet lettuce edging at the cuffs and hems give it a feminine touch, and I love all of the colors it incorporates. It fits TTS (true to size), and I’m wearing an XS. (Read that: flat-chested.) I knew it would be perfect with my favorite fringe hem NYJD jeans.
If you’ve never worn NYDJ jeans, you need to check them out pronto! NYDJ stands for “Not Your Daughter’s Jeans,” and I’m telling you, they are the greatest. They have “lift & tuck technology”® (“technology” – LOL!) that lifts your booty and tucks in your tummy for the most flattering fit ev-ah. I’m telling you, if there are perfect jeans for women over 50, it’s these! They’re guaranteed to take a size off, so order a size down if you’re planning to place an order. For more information, you can check out the NYDJ website or the wide assortment of NYDJ styles at Nordstrom. (Any-hoo, I digress! Sorry. Right! Striped sweaters…)
You may be worried that horizontal stripes will make you look wider than you are. I get you, but I’m asking you to hear me out on this one! For one thing, a fitted bottom paired with a roomy, oversized sweater is the freshest look right now (see every single sweater currently in stock at Madewell). There are lots of big, roomy striped sweaters out there that will look uber-chic with skinny jeans, leggings, or fitted slacks. Also, the color block trend means that you can find striped sweaters with the darkest color block on the bottom (see this tunic sweater from Ann Taylor), providing an overall slimming effect. Here are some examples of the striped sweater trend in a wide variety of styles.
2. Patent Shoes
Patent leather shoes make me think about the classic black patent Mary Janes I dressed my daughter in for church when she was a little girl. Come to think of it, my mom dressed me in black patent Mary Janes back in the 60s when I was a little girl! Did your mom do that too?
(Pause for a PSA…) If any of you are still wearing patent Mary Janes at our age, we need to have a serious talk. Just because they’re available, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s okay to wear them! A better alternative: Sam Edelman’s Felicia ballet flats. How cute is this sparkly black pair? (Again, I digress! Right! Patent shoes…)
3. Moto Jackets
Of the three fall trends that surprised me, I think moto jackets may be the most wearable for women over fifty! They’re easy to incorporate into what you already own, making it a great style update for women of any age, stage, and size. (Plus, you can find options at all different price points!) There are inexpensive faux suede versions like this one at Nordstrom. (It even comes in a bunch of color options!) There are also beautiful vegan leather, tweed, knit and shearling-lined styles. I just bought this green vegan leather one for an event I’m attending later this month. If you’re all about authenticity and want to go with real leather, I think this is a fairly well-priced one. Think of a moto jacket as an alternative to a blazer.
4. BONUS TREND ALERT: Red Shoes
Red shoes are nothing new, but the proliferation of them this year has reached epic proportions! Have you noticed? I bought these red suede ankle strap sandals last spring and wore them with dresses, skirts, slacks, and jeans all spring and summer long. (Here’s an Instagram post where I wore them with gingham ankle pants.) I was shocked when Nordstrom restocked them, but then I realized they might just be the perfect holiday party sandal! While I wouldn’t want to walk miles in them, the block heel and padded insole make them comfortable and easy to wear. Dontcha love it when you buy something that has more shelf life in it than you originally thought?! (Pause while Suzy high fives herself.) Thanks to a touch of arthritis, my feet are pretty wide at the ball of my foot, but the front strap stops right before that joint, so they fit me well. Yesterday I did an Instagram post featuring them and talking about this trend, and I linked a bunch of red shoe faves in multiple style options and at multiple price points (see below).
Have you noticed these three four fall trends as you’ve been out shopping? Which one do you like best? What fall trends have surprised you this year? I’d love to know!
Happy Wednesday, you guys! On Friday I’m going to feature some of my faves from the Gifts for Him section of my Holiday Gift Guide and tell you about a little seminar on men’s style that I went to at Nordstrom. They told us the three things men need to do to update their wardrobes and bring them “into the current decade!” (As they put it!) Oh, yeah. We’re gonna make over your man! 🙂
