A shirtdress is a wardrobe staple and a classic in your closet! I have a couple of them, don’t you? The best thing about it is that it’s easy to throw on, button up, and head out the door! But I’ll confess, sometimes I run out of style inspiration when it comes to this versatile little number. I styled mine for this post in a pretty simple way, but there’s so much you can do with a shirtdress! Today, I’m sharing ten ways to style a shirtdress. Ready for some inspiration?
BTW, if you don’t have a shirtdress in your closet that you love, check out the boutique I’ve curated just for you at the bottom of this post.
1. Style a Shirtdress: The Classic
Most shirtdresses will come with an attached tie or belt. Either knot or tie a bow (y’all know I’m such the bow girl!) and then take your cue from the buttons to dictate the rest of your look. I wasn’t really looking for a shirtdress when I found this one, at J.Crew Factory, but I fell for the gorgeous fall color and the price point! (It’s in stock in sizes 00-22 and only $38.50!) Since my dress came with brown buttons, I styled it with my favorite wedges. (They were actually Nordstrom’s best selling shoe of the summer and they’re still going strong!)
Since we’ve still got temps in the high 80s and low 90s down south, we’re all doing our best to look autumnal with fall colors in lightweight fabrics and darker shoes! I also added my favorite rattan circle bag and this goes-with-anything gold tassel necklace, along with my gold Tory Burch logo earrings.
2. Style a Shirtdress: Add Some Sneaks
For a loose, super casual look, remove the tie or belt, cut those wimpy little strings on the sides — they never seem to be in the right spot anyhow — (hahahahaha!), and add your favorite pair of slip-on sneakers and a great crossbody bag.
3. Style a Shirtdress: Top it Off
Add an inexpensive faux suede moto jacket to toughen up your look.
4. Style a Shirtdress: Belt it, Baby
5. Style a Shirtdress: Booties for the Win
Add your favorite pair of short, low-heeled booties for fresh, up-to-date look. (I’m obsessed with these Seychelles Renowned booties because of the unique ruffled leather on the back!)
6. Style a Shirtdress: Add a Scarf…Somewhere
If you read my post on the 2018 Shoe & Accessory Trends, you know that the scarf is back! Get creative and add one either as a belt, a neckerchief, or loosely wrapped around your neck.
7. Style a Shirtdress: Denim and You’re Done
You’ve probably already got a denim jacket hanging in your closet. Add it on top and pair with some booties or sneakers for a darling fall look. Need to update your denim jacket? Old Navy has a great selection in everything from indigo to distressed chambray, and their prices are awesome. (I especially love this black one!) I’m a huge fan of Old Navy’s denim jackets because they’re slightly fitted through the body, and they hit just below the waist for a super flattering look.
8. Style a Shirtdress: Lovin’ Long Sleeves
If you don’t have a long sleeve shirtdress, you might want to consider my classic one above from Old Navy. They bring this dress back every single year because it is one of their all-time best sellers! (The price is right and you’ll have it forever!) You can do anything I suggested in numbers 1-7 above with this long sleeve dress! Just remember the tips in my How to Wear Denim on Denim post if you want to style it with a denim jacket on top. 🙂
Long-Sleeve Denim Shirtdress (Only $37!) | Black SPANX Leggings | Animal Print Belt (Similar) | Booties (Similar) | Tory Burch Clutch/Crossbody | Tory Burch Black Logo Earrings (Mine square, these round.)
9. Style a Shirtdress: Layer it With Leggings
This is the same denim shirtdress, but here I’ve layered it with leggings and added booties and Tory Burch’s Robinson Wallet. (It’s Tory’s best-selling bag ever!) It’s available in a rainbow of colors and can be carried as a clutch, a wristlet, or worn either short, long, or crossbody with a pretty gold chain. It’s honestly the most versatile bag I’ve ever owned!
10. Style a Shirtdress: Pull on a Pullover (Sweater)
Whether you wear a short sleeve or long sleeve shirtdress, and whether you wear it with bare legs or with leggings, consider pulling a crewneck or v-neck pullover sweater on top when the weather gets cooler. I’ve been getting lots of emails and DMs from you all sharing your frustration with the shorter (or cropped) sweaters that are out there right now! I feel your pain, and honestly, I think it’s a widespread conspiracy to force us all to purchase high waisted jeans!!! That said, this would be the perfect place to incorporate an of-the-moment shorter sweater. (Where’s that eye roll emoji when I need it?)
10. Style a Shirtdress: Make a Statement
Add some statement jewelry to an otherwise simple shirtdress to elevate your outfit. Be sure to add either a statement necklace OR statement earrings OR a statement bracelet, and keep the other accessories simple.
I hope you got some style inspo today! What’s your favorite way to wear a shirtdress? Leave me a comment and let me know!
