Sometimes all you need to update your existing wardrobe is a new pair of shoes or a few hot accessories! Today, I’m sharing the 2018 fall shoe and accessory trends you’ll want to incorporate into your existing wardrobe. I worked hard to find affordable, on point examples of the trends that you’d really want to wear! As always, click on the pink links or any of the images for more information or to shop.

Pointy-toe shoes (with varying degrees of pointiness) continue to dominate shoe styles. These range from uber pointy to a more wearable rounded point (as in my mules above). The hottest color for accessories for fall among the fashion forward? White! The big high-fashion bloggers will all be sporting white accessories as they bridge the gap between summer and winter.
The mule is the dominant style, with everything from flat to heeled versions. If you think you can’t wear them because they won’t stay on, I’d urge you to keep looking for the style that fits your feet the best. Look for styles that come up higher on your foot, with a comfortable, cushy footbed, and a heel height that feels comfortable. (Please note: Many of the shoe styles I’ve shown are also available in black (and other colors)! As black doesn’t photograph as well, in most cases, I opted to show the shoe in another color instead. If you see a style you like, be sure to click through to check out the other available colors.)
Snakeskin – Wear snakeskin as a neutral, mixed with denim, crisp white shirts, and only wear one piece at a time. (You’ll see it in other accessories below as well.)
Ruffles – Watch for ruffles on all styles of shoes this season. I love this trend, and just ordered this darling pair of ruffled booties in black. I bought them in white (sold out) this summer, and they’re so comfortable because the leather is butter-soft.
Fun Fabrication – Whether calf-hair, brocade, velvet, tweed, flannel, or intricate embroidery, shoes with fun designs and fabrics are everywhere. Everyone worries that fabric-covered shoes will be difficult to keep clean, but the busy, fabric on these on-point styles won’t show a thing! Wear them with otherwise simple outfits to give them the attention they deserve!
Cowgirl – Bless your heart! If you live in the south, you know never to get rid of your cowboy boots! In varied manifestations this year, you’ll see the cowgirl trend subtly—or not so subtly—reflected in shoe and boot trends this fall. If you’re in the market for a new set of booties, you might want to look for a pair that subtly manifests this vibe.

Handbags – The satchel (aka “top-handle bag”) is the in look this season. Some of these will have O-ring handles, so if you like that style, go for it! BTW, people don’t use the term “purse” much anymore! It’s been replaced by “handbag.” (Look at Suzy trying to update your lingo as well as your style! I am FULL-service, people!) Don’t worry! Handbag designers know that we can’t all afford to buy a new bag every single year, so things like the bucket bag, crossbody, and tote are all still out there.
Hot Nail Colors to Try – From Blood Red to Olive Green, fall is a great time, and your nails are a safe way, to try the hottest colors. Scroll through!
2018 Fall Shoe & Accessory Trends to Skip
- Overly embellished shoes with poms or feathers – (They either look too young or like you’re just trying too hard.)
- Over the Knee boots – There are those who will disagree with me on this one, but I think they look silly on women over 50 (especially because they’re usually worn with ultra-short skirts).
- Ultra pointy-toe shoes – As my husband says, “Why does that lady have on those ‘witch’ shoes?”
- Hobo Bags – These tend to look messy.
- Backpacks – Unless you’re back in college, (And hey, if you are, props!) OR you’re traveling, I’d skip this look.
- Animal Prints – Don’t kill me! I love them and own tons, but they come back every single fall! I’m wearing mine in moderation, but I’m not buying it anymore. (The more updated look is snakeskin.)

P. S. Bob and I are at Walt Disney World this week on our empty nester fall getaway! Why Disney? Well, it’s always super fun, and we’re seeing some great musical artists while we’re here at Epcot! (We saw Mercy Me on Tuesday and we’re seeing Tauren Wells this weekend.) Be sure to watch my Instagram and Facebook feeds and stories for lots of BTS (behind the scenes) snaps of our trip!
