Every year, my Fall Fashion Trends post is one of my most popular! I know you all wait anxiously for it because I started getting DMs and emails in late July asking me when it was coming. (Hahahaha!) I’m so glad you like it! It’s fun for me to put together. This year’s styles are easy to wear, and I think you’ll find some things you really like. I worked hard to find affordable, on point examples of the trends that you’d really want to add to your closet! As always, click on the pink links or any of the images for more information.
Color it Fall
According to Pantone Color Institute’s Fall/Winter 2018 Color Trend Report, these ten hues will dominate fashion. Here are a few examples of colors I think you’ll be seeing the most of in the fall fashion trends.
2018 Fall Fashion Trends to Shop
Raw Edge Denim – The newest hemline is ankle-length. With your longer skinny jeans from past years, turn up and cuff them like you did last year; but consider investing in some ankle-length raw edge denim jeans in blue and black. My favorite jeans brand is NYDJ (stands for “Not Your Daughter’s Jeans”) because they’re stretchy and comfy and they lift and tuck you in all the right places. I bought a pair of raw edge jeans in blue and black for myself from this brand I trust. (If you order, opt for a size down from your normal size.) The alternative to raw edge hem is the step hem.
Overalls – Thanks to Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, overalls are back! I haven’t bought a pair yet, but I’ve got my eye on this pair. Wear them with tennies and a simple tee underneath for errands or weekend fun.
Joggers -Joggers are the newest trend in streetwear. Not as baggy as the sweatpants we wore in college, they do feature a banded hem, drawstring waist, and sometimes a “racing stripe” down the side of the leg.
Wide Leg Pants – Again with the pajama look! I told y’all this summer during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale that these would be big this fall. They can be flattering when paired with a close-fitting top.
Logo Belts – Although belts are technically an accessory (2018 Fall Shoe & Accessory Trends coming in a post later this week!) logo belts are such a hot trend this year, and so important to the overall look of your outfit, I opted to include them in this post! Although you’ll see lots of designer logo tees, a belt is the newest way to sport your favorite designer logo. The one I’m wearing in this post is reversible to white because I figured if I was going to spend this much money, I may as well get a twofer!
The “Nightgown” Look – Complete with girly yoke collars and ruffles, these styles will remind you of the nightgowns your mama used to dress you in at bedtime.
Must-Have Jacket – If there’s a must-have to quickly update your wardrobe this fall, it would be the field jacket (aka utility jacket). These are meant to be worn open, like a casual blazer.
Florals – Usually reserved for spring, florals are big for fall this year too.
2018 Fall Fashion Trends to Skip
This is always touchy because there are people out there who believe that you can wear anything at any age. Let me just say, I am not one of those people! I think women over fifty who dress too young just look silly. Yep, it’s just my opinion, but here are a few of the fall fashion trends I think women 50+ should skip. (Feel free to disagree! You do you, girl!)
- Overly-distressed/ripped jeans – They just look messy! Opt for raw edge denim instead.
- High-Low dresses – The asymmetrical hemline is a fresher look.
- Wide Leg Crop Jeans – By all means, go for wide leg pants, but these don’t do you any favors in terms of elongating and slimming.
I hope this post got you excited about fall fashion! What trends are you most excited about wearing? Are there any trends I didn’t cover or that you are still wondering about? If so, leave me a comment and I’ll do my best to answer your question! Oh, and also, if you’re on Pinterest, you might want to follow me and/or pin this post for future reference!

P. S. Bob and I are at Walt Disney World this week on our empty nester fall getaway! Why Disney? Well, it’s always super fun, and my favorite band (Mercy Me) is performing there two nights in a row! Be sure to watch my Instagram and Facebook feeds and stories for lots of BTS (behind the scenes) snaps of our trip!
