Whether you are sending your first, or your final, child off to college, shopping for dorm room supplies (call it that if you have a boy) or dorm room décor (use this word if you have a girl) is a huge project. I’m just going to give it to you straight. If you have a boy, setting up the dorm room will be cheaper. If you have a girl, it will be more fun. There you go, I said it. I’ve done the supplies thing twice, and the décor thing once, and today I’m going to give you the lowdown.
If you have a boy, have him choose a color. His choices are black, brown, or navy. Then go to this website, print out the list of supplies he will need, and shop online or go in person to Walmart and Target to get all of the supplies on the list, in his chosen color. Sit down at the computer with him, or if you go in person, take him with you. Please note: this will not be his idea of a good time. Be prepared for a lot of, “Do I REALLY need all of this stuff?” type of questions. Tell him yes and that he can thank you later. Understand that this process may make you emotional. DO NOT start sobbing in the Walmart Supercenter. He will die of embarrassment. If you feel yourself starting to get emotional, send him across the store to find something challenging, like a bed bug mattress protector. Then pull yourself together. We have all been there, sister. I am so sorry.
If you have a girl, this process will look a lot different (with the exception of the possible mom emotions in the middle of Walmart). First of all, know that the whole matching bedspread thing that we all did in college is dead. Roommate coordination now will likely involve agreeing on a particular color scheme, with each girl doing her own thing within the decided-upon palette. Trust me when I tell you to have your daughter shop online for dorm room bedding, coordinating towels, etc. because the selections at stores will dwindle rapidly. Then, print out the aforementioned list, and shop (you guessed it!) Walmart and Target (and possibly Bed, Bath & Beyond and The Container Store) to order everything for her dorm room – from coordinating wastebaskets to toothbrush holders. I’ve linked to some great online places to shop below, and even given you some ideas for bedding to get you started. Important to note: Shopping online will get you the best selection and prices! Just click the pink links.
Anthropologie – I know your daughter loves their clothes. Did you know they carried bedding too?
Bed, Bath & Beyond – This is a good place to start, but know that absolutely EVERYONE will start here.
Hayneedle – Cute and affordable designs. I love this bedding set. This one is adorable too. Lots on sale!
Macy’s – Wonderful Bed in a Bag sets. This one is so cute, and it’s reversible!
Nordstrom – Y’all know I love this retailer, and they have some great bedding deals during the Anniversary Sale (ends Aug. 5). This set is too cute.
PB Teen – This is where we found my daughter’s bedding. The quality is there, the designs are precious, and everything’s on sale right now!
Kate Spade – Fresh, fun designs, of course! This may just be the cutest bedding I’ve seen this year. Free shipping/returns site-wide.
Target – Some of these sets are precious. I especially love this set for girls.
TJ Maxx – Again, you might want to use this link to order online. The in-store selection will be spotty.
Wayfair – I love this site for basic solid or simple print bedding sets that are perfect for boys. They also have darling sets for girls. Check out this swoon-worthy set.
Walmart – In a bid to compete with Amazon, Walmart has pledged to up their game recently. Check out these darling and affordable bedding options that don’t look Walmarty at all!
Make supplying (or decorating) the dorm room a fun project for you and your college-bound student to do together. Oh, and don’t bother to get more than one set of sheets. Why? Brace yourself…Your little darling may not even wash that one set the whole first semester. Sigh…
