Once a month I open up, give you a life update, and share my heart with you. I wish I could sit down and have coffee with each one of you, and we could have a good long chat in person. This is the next best thing! So, In the spirit of those old SNL “Coffee Talk” skits with Mike Myers as Linda Richman, let’s have cawfee, and let’s tawk! Here’s what’s on my heart this month.
Two Giant Kids Are at Home
You may remember that I have two of my adult kids at home for the summer. (I wrote an entire post about our “plan” for going from empty nest to full nest that you can read here.) Our 25-year-old son is studying for the Bar Exam. Needless to say, this is no fun. When our boys were teens, we had them read the book Do Hard Things. It was written by two teenagers for other teenagers, to encourage them to look at adolescence as not a vacation from responsibility, but rather as the launching pad of life. It’s been amazing to see the lessons our son learned from it come to life right before our eyes. I highly recommend it — especially if you’re prepping one to head off to college soon.
Our 21-year-old daughter is home as well, and she’s lit up our house with her ebullient personality. Although joyful, she’s one of those kids that constantly gives us heart attacks because she always seems to have a story for every situation. Stuff just happens to her. (I know you all know people like that!) Anyway, having her here makes life exciting, for sure. #prayforus 🙂
I shared this on Instagram recently, and it’s so true:
I think it’s so funny that I get all excited when one of my adult kids asks me to go somewhere or do something with them! ☺ Even if it’s just to go to the doctor or to pick them up after they drop their car off at the shop, I’m ALL about it. (I’ve done BOTH of those things this week, BTW!) As an #emptynester, I recognize that being invited into my grown kids’ lives is a privilege – and one I want to be worthy of by being a blessing and encouragement to them. 🤗 Do you feel that way too?
Thank You for the Feedback!
About a month ago, I shared that one of my readers told me that she got “discouraged” when my posts were too long and it was hard to make herself read them. (This made me feel terrible, BTW!) I asked what you all thought about that, and if you agreed. I was overwhelmed at your response! You said I should not worry about the length of my posts and I should say what I wanted to say, and not worry about it. Thank you for that feedback! Prepare for me to become extremely long-winded. #justkidding
We are traveling like crazy people this summer! Bob and I took a fun empty nester getaway to NYC in late May. (Post coming next week!) A couple of weeks later, we went to our favorite island with our son and daughter-in-law, which was awesome. (BTW, I’ve been documenting these trips on my Instagram and Facebook stories.) Next week, we’re headed to our favorite resort in the Florida Keys for a long weekend. Bob and I are going to snorkel and snorkel some more — which is one of our favorite things to do together. If you want to see ridiculous pictures of me in my snorkel gear, follow me on Instagram or Facebook.
I got two reader comments/questions this month that I thought I would share with you all! The first question had to do with some of the beauty products that I recommended in two recent posts. The first was Melt-Proof Makeup | My Review of the Best Waterproof Makeup and the second was entitled How to Get Your Middle-Aged Legs Ready for Summer. She felt that some of the products I recommended were “dangerous” because they weren’t natural. Yikes! I know lots of people are very convicted about the importance of clean beauty, and I think that’s great. I love natural beauty products and use some, but I don’t exclusively use them. I want to be authentic and honest with you, and you’ll notice that most of the time in beauty posts I tell you what I personally use or what I’ve heard about from a friend or expert. I’m always open to your suggestions and recommendations, and I know that not everyone will agree with all of my choices. That’s okay! We can still be friends! 🙂 xoxo
The second reader question I wanted to share came after my post called Want an Instant Facelift? Contouring/Highlighting Basics for Women 50+. In it, I shared what I’d learned when I took a contouring and highlighting makeup lesson. I did my best to make it as simple as possible for you all. One of my readers asked me if I did the entire routine every day, or just on special occasions. The answer is…(drumroll please!) only on special occasions.
Most days in the summer I wear as little makeup as possible. Here are my everyday summer beauty essentials.
