The metallic trend is here to stay! I didn’t set out to embrace it the way I have, but I’ve loved finding fun ways to incorporate it into my existing wardrobe. As with any trend, you don’t want to go overboard and wear it from head-to-toe. (Um, you might look a little bit like a Chipotle burrito if you did that..!) So how can you wear it in a fresh and updated way without it overwhelming you? I’m going to show you.
Pick a Color
Although it’s okay to mix metals when it comes to jewelry; with clothing, doing something like mixing rose gold (the newest, on point metal of the moment) with silver or gold might be a little much. For the most economical and practical way to wear metallics, I’d pick a hue that’s flattering on you, and stick with it. Whether it’s gold, silver, copper, or rose gold, you’ll find plenty of options to work into your existing wardrobe. I chose gold because I thought it was the best metallic for my hair and the warm undertones of my complexion. Also, let’s be real — it’s one of my college colors, and I thought I could wear this gold tee to football games! (Another good option for warm complexions is copper, BTW.) Those of you with cool undertones should probably opt for silver or rose gold. (Not sure if your skin undertones are warm or cool? Check out this article.)
A Little Goes a Long Way
Shiny metallics are pretty bold, so you don’t need much to make a significant style statement. Unless you’re J Lo or some kind of lounge singer, incorporating one significant piece per look is probably all you need to do. I chose this loose-fitting gold tee. (It’s also available in silver, and both are less than $25 right now.)
Metallic shoe and handbag options abound this year! When it comes to a tote or handbag, working the metallic trend into your look is easy to do. Consider metallics a neutral and go for it! (This silver metallic tote is adorable and affordable!) Want to elevate your look at a summer wedding? Select a chic metallic clutch.
The metallic trend is never more evident than when it comes to shoes! Not comfortable with the white shoe trend yet? Choose a metallic shoe for the perfect substitute. (Remember, treat is as a neutral.)
Still feeling unsure? Work a metallic hue into your jewelry! From drusy earrings or necklaces to rose gold anything, jewelry is a great way to dip your toe into the metallic pool without making a big commitment.
The jeans I have on in this post have metallic thread and ribbons at the hemline and compliment my gold tee perfectly! If you’re still not ready for a big commitment when it comes to the metallic trend, look for metallic thread woven into tops, shorts, jeans, or dresses. I’ve pulled together a little boutique of metallic styles at the bottom of this post. Click any of the images for more information.
