It’s no secret that the embroidery trend is having its fashion moment. Oh, it’s been around for awhile, but never has it been so easy-to-wear, accessible, and affordable. I love the embroidery trend because I think it adds a luxurious touch to things we wear every day, elevating them to make them memorable and unique. As empty nesters, we all have a closet full of clothes (Um, at least I do!), and I’m always looking for a way to add trendy pieces into what I already have in my existing wardrobe. Enter embroidery.
Embroidery has been around since 30,000 BC. (What???) In fact, throughout recorded history, sculptures, paintings, and vases have depicted inhabitants of ancient civilizations wearing embroidered clothing. It was a mark of wealth and status in many cultures, with techniques passed from generation to generation by women.
Today, embroidery is everywhere! (Aren’t we lucky?) I’m showing you the pieces I purchased, how I incorporated it into my look and giving you suggestions for how you can do it too. I’ve given you lots of examples at all price points and even included prices in the widgets (the images below the text). You should know that often there will be additional sales on the items that you can only find when you click through to see them, so don’t let the prices stop you if you want more info. You can also click on the pink text links for details.
I opted for this floral embroidered mixed media camisole from WHBM as my key embroidered piece because I loved the sweet ruffle trimmed neckline and straps, and the way the sheer overlay fell so beautifully. In case you’re keeping count, that’s three of this year’s hottest fashion trends in one top — embroidery, ruffles, and sheer! (My husband says in hockey that’s called a hat trick.) I also chose a darling embroidered straw clutch (It has a chain strap so you can wear it as a shoulder or crossbody bag too.), which I’ve found goes with just about everything in my closet.
You can find the embroidery trend in tops of all shapes and sizes right now, and it’s so easy to throw a sweet, embroidered top on with your favorite white jeans and head out the door. Here are some of my favorites. (Despite what it says below, my cami is on sale right now for $47.99.)
Jeans & Shorts
You’ll see the embroidery trend out there on skinny jeans, boyfriend jeans, and girlfriend jeans. (If you don’t know the difference between those, I ran it down in this post.) You’ll also find lots of embroidered shorts, but I had a difficult time finding them in lengths that seemed age-appropriate. I did find a longer cute pair at Walmart, however! (The company has been all over the news lately talking about how they are upping their game in the apparel arena, to compete with Amazon.)
Dresses & Skirts
Since embroidery has traditionally been seen as a luxury embellishment, the special occasion dress category is full of exquisite, intricate examples of the embroidery trend. If you’re an empty nester with a son or daughter getting married this year, keep an eye out for it as you shop for your MOB or MOG dress. 🙂 Beyond that, there are darling embroidered dresses and skirts that would work for everything from work or your weekly grocery grab to a summer wedding or shower.
Whether you’re looking for a graceful pair of pumps, on-point kitten heels, block-heeled mules, of-the-moment espadrilles, comfy sandals, or even slip-on sneakers, you’ll find some adorable embroidered shoes out there this season. I bought these darling sneakers for my daughter when she was home on Spring Break last week.
Embroidered watch faces and watch bands are everywhere this year, and there are some cute examples of the trend in earrings and necklaces as well. (Think Mother’s Day gifts, y’all!) I especially love these darling personalized necklaces for graduation or bridesmaid gifts.
Is it just me, or does it seem like every building over-achieves in the air conditioning department in the summer?! I’m always on the lookout for cute jackets or cardis to toss over my shoulders. This jacket with the ruffled hem is such a neutral color that I have already worn it several times. I especially like the way the stand-up collar camouflages my neck area and directs attention to my face. I was thrilled when I found some earrings that coordinated perfectly!
On my feet are Tom’s new Elba suede booties. Since they’re perforated, they’re perfect for this time of year. I’ll wear them all summer and well into fall. If you’ve been hanging around here for awhile now, you know I’m crazy about Tom’s shoes. With their cushy insoles and flexible soles, they’re so comfortable on my midlife feet! These block heel beauties are no exception, and the rope laces with the tassels on the end had me at “hello.” One thing I especially appreciate about them is that the elastic at the back means I don’t have to undo the laces to get them on and off every time I wear them. This color is called toffee, but they’re also available in cadet blue.
Do you like the embroidery trend? How do you plan to wear it this year?
I’m headed out to Florida today to visit my parents and then spend a long weekend with Bob on Sanibel Island. Watch my Instastory for some fun photos!
