A crisp black and white look always looks fresh and classic. It never goes out of style! It works into your existing wardrobe beautifully, and with the right accessories, it’s perfect for any occasion. Every year I buy at least one new black and white item to add to my collection. To keep it current, I try to incorporate the latest trends into the piece. This year was no different!
The black and white gingham poplin shirt I chose this year features a few of the key spring and summer style trends that I love. It has ruffles at the bottom of both sleeves, and most interestingly, it incorporates the asymmetrical trend with yet another ruffle down the left sleeve. In general, I think the asymmetrical trend can be kind of tricky. With something like a hemline or neckline that is way higher on one side than the other, I think it can sometimes look like you bought a second from an outlet! But on this top, I think the asymmetry looks fun and fresh. My top is 40% off right now, and it also comes in a blue multi stripe that would be great with jeans and a solid white that would make a great basic. You can’t beat this quality for $35.40! (Click on the images below for more information.)
I’m a firm believer in swapping out accessories to change up your look. For a casual style, I added my pearl studs and this inexpensive acrylic monogram necklace. It comes in eight different colors, three different monogram sizes (mine’s a large), two different monogram styles, and either gold or silver chain options! (At under $40, it would make a great graduation gift.) I will tell you that since it’s acrylic (actually a big trend in jewelry and home accessories right now), it looked a little fragile when it arrived, but for a personalized, casual look, it’s perfect. I ordered mine in “pearly white” so it would compliment anything and everything I wear this spring and summer. (But I linked it below in black because it’s easier to see.)
On my feet, I’m wearing my favorite purchase of the year so far! These slip-on sneakers by Kate Spade are girly and comfortable. The frilly leather ruffled trim is too cute, and I adore the jeweled embellishment. They run wide, so you might order a half size down from your usual size. If these are a bit much for you, check out the others in this collection below.)
Isn’t it great when you can change up your look by just changing your earrings, necklace, and shoes? For a dressier look, I went with all black. My earrings are by Dana Buchman, and I’ve had them for awhile. They’re my go-to classy black earrings, and they were only $14 when I bought them. (Now they’re $7.70.) I love it when jewelry looks more expensive than it is! In this case, it looks way more expensive. 🙂 My sliver and black lariat tassel necklace is sold out, but I’ve linked one that’s nearly identical (and with beaded tassels, maybe even cuter!).
The high-waisted black ankle pants I’m wearing in this post are part of the J.Crew Collection for Nordstrom. (There are so many cute pieces in this collection!) I live in my jeans, but these seasonless pants are stretchy and easy to move in, and because they’re not jeans, they’re more versatile, and I can dress them up or down. They’re one of my wardrobe staples, for sure! My shoes are Tom’s suede Majorca mule sandals, and with the big block heel and cushy Tom’s insole, they’re easy to walk in and comfy. I’ve worn them with everything from dresses and skirts to long shorts and these cropped ankle pants. They feel so good on my feet; I bought them in tan as well!
Finally, y’all always ask me about my lipstick and nail polish, so here’s the breakdown. 🙂 On my fingernails, I’m wearing my latest fave. It’s called Limo-Scene, and it’s the sweet neutral color that Meghan Markle wore when she and Prince Harry announced their engagement. (I’m obsessed!) I’ve linked my toenail polish and super inexpensive lipstick (a universally flattering shade called Rhubarb) below.
Happy Monday, friends! Do you have kiddos home for Spring Break? My law school son is home for his last Spring Break ever, and I’m so enjoying him! Let me know what you think of the black and white look, okay?
