Here in Dallas, we are starting to see signs of spring. It’s been rainy and warmer, and the humidity and allergies are in full swing — sure signs that spring is on its way! Even if it’s still snowy where you are, with Easter right around the corner, I’m sure you’ve been drooling over the spring looks in stores like I have! Today, I’m sharing the key spring style and summer style trends you need to know. I’ve indicated the looks that will be around for awhile — and I think you might need to invest in — as well as some fun and inexpensive trendy pieces that you might want to consider adding into your existing wardrobe. I worked especially hard this year to find examples that are affordable! For more information, click the pink text links OR scroll through the images and click them for more information.
This spring, look for anything with satin, sequins, or shine. The metallic of the moment: gold. Ruching will be big, and sheer fabrics will abound (so invest in some simple camisoles to wear underneath!).
2. Necklines and Hems
Watch for asymmetrical necklines, hemlines or sleeves. Also watch for square necklines, and a continued focus on longer hemlines.
Fringe will be huge, as well as frayed hems on jeans. You’ll also continue to see feathers and tulle, as well as ruffles, bows tassels, and especially pom-poms. Look for a continuation of the lace-up and embroidery trends.
The color of the season is lavender, along with other pastels. Just as navy and black was the cool color combination for fall/winter, you’ll see pink and red paired. If pastels aren’t your thing, never fear, bold Crayola colors are also everywhere, with a particular focus on a lemon-drop yellow and coral.
Checks, plaids, stripes, and black and white is everywhere. Pattern mixing will continue to be a thing.
6. Pants & Jeans
Whether long, cropped, wide leg or straight, invest in the pants style that suits your body type best. (All of those are out there.) Pretty much all of the pants and jeans you’ll see will feature a high waist. This is a good look for midlife women, so consider spending some money on this new silhouette. Skinny jeans will still be around, but they’ll feature (you guessed it!) a high waist. Skinnies not your thing? Watch for “girlfriend,” “boyfriend.” and “mom” jeans. Here’s the breakdown: Boyfriend jeans are baggy and loose. Girlfriend jeans are a more feminine version of the boyfriend jean, and fit tighter and higher on the hip, with a tapered slim straight leg. Mom jeans feature a high waist and straight leg. I think the most flattering cut is the girlfriend jean.
The tailored look of a belted trench coat is back, along with anoraks. Watch for the continued trend toward sharper, clean-cut blazers that started this fall.
The white shoe is back in a big way. (I hear you groaning!) I recommend that you invest in at least one pair. The mule is still going strong, and kitten heels are the way to go. You’ll see lots of pointy toes. Sparkly shoes are also having a moment, and you’ll want to watch for woven-leather flats. You’ll continue to see slip-on tennies, and often they’ll incorporate the other spring and summer style trends or have embellishments. (I just bought these.)
Watch for geometric earrings and straw hats. If you need a new handbag, opt for a circle bag, straw bag, clutch, or a fanny pack. (I see you rolling your eyes!) Last summer’s obsession with the Cult Gia Ark bag is still with us. This year’s “it bag?” I predict it will be this one.
I incorporated some of the spring and summer style trends in my outfit for this post. It’s casual and comfortable, and perfect for errands or a grocery grab. My coral lace-up floral embroidered sweatshirt is ideal for spring days that are cool in the morning and warmer in the afternoon. (It also comes in a gorgeous blue.) I kept my accessories simple with pearl stud earrings. (Yes, you can wear them for a casual or a dressy look.) My ankle-length jeans are high-waisted and from NYDJ. (My fave brand because they’re so comfy, and they have something called lift-tuck technology that holds you in right where you need it.) My slip-on tennies are old, and I’ve worn them to pieces. In fact, right after we shot these photos, I decided that it was time for them to retire, and I replaced them with this pair of white embellished slip-ons.
What trends are you looking forward to wearing the most this spring? Please let me know in the comments. (It would help me so much in planning future posts!)
I hope you found this post informative and helpful! If you liked it, please consider sharing it with a friend. (That’s the sweetest compliment you could ever give me!)
