Happy New Year, friends! I love the freshness of a new year, don’t you? It’s a time to reflect on the previous year, and consider what we want to do differently in the coming year. I’m not really big on those giant resolutions some people make, but I do appreciate the opportunity to kind of press the restart button and resolve to do more of a few things and less of a few things in the year ahead. Today, I’m getting personal and sharing my resolutions with you.
Here’s What I’m Going to do MORE
√ Smile – Christie Brinkley, still stunning at 60+, says smiling is her number one beauty secret. “Smile. It instantly lifts the face and it just lights up the room,” she recently told Savannah Guthrie on the Today Show.
√ Drink Water – This is the number one thing you can do to improve your skin! How much should we be drinking? I wrote an entire post about it.
√ Listen – Especially to my adult kids when they share their hopes and dreams.
√ Try New Things – As I get older, I become more resistant to trying new things! Do you? I don’t want to be that “stuck in my ways” person who is afraid to learn or try new things.
√ Pray – Prayer is an intimate conversation with God. It’s not just a privilege; it’s also a necessity!
√ Sleep – I’ve written on this before, but I’ve been reading a lot lately on the science of sleep. Watch for an upcoming post!
√ Move – Even though I work out, my actual step count has decreased since the kids left home. (Plus, with Empty Nest Blessed, I sit at the computer a lot!) I’m going to look for ways to work more movement into my days.
Here’s What I’m Going to do LESS
√ Interrupt – I have a real problem with this! I don’t mean to be rude. (Really!) I think it’s basically a patience problem. I’m going to work on it.
√ Slouch – I’ve shared before that I have horrible posture! I have to be constantly aware of it. Experts say the best way to fix this is to strengthen your core. I see more crunches in my future.
√ Compare – When I compare myself to others, I usually end up on the short end of the stick. Sigh. I’m going to try to remind myself that I’m a work in progress.
√ Regret – Now that my kids are grown, I see the deficits in my parenting and I tend to beat myself up about it. Do you do that too? It’s not productive, nor is it helpful. All I can change is the future.
√ Talk – I want to be slow to speak and quick to listen. I need to stop blurting and think more about if what I have to say is really necessary.
√ Long for the Future – Right now is all we’ve really got. I’m going to focus on being grateful in the moment. (Even if it’s a messy moment.)
√ Fear – I’m scared of so many things! I’m scared of something happening to Bob or one of my kids. I’m scared of what other people think of me. I’m scared of not being a blessing and a help to you all. Fear is the ugly stepsister of insecurity. The antidote? I think it’s authenticity, vulnerability, and faith. I’m going to share more of myself with you this year. Yikes!
What are your resolutions for this year? I’d love to know! Would you share some of them with me in the comments below?
I’m headed to Orlando tomorrow to pick up my girl! (She spent the fall doing an internship at Walt Disney World.) We’ll be driving her car home to Dallas on Thursday and Friday and I’m so looking forward to the long, uninterrupted time with her. We’ve been out to visit her twice, but she hasn’t been home since mid-August! My law student son, Connor, will be heading back to school while I’m gone, and a part of my heart is going with him. One of the things that surprised me the most about the empty nest is that it never seems to get easier when they leave. (I cry a little every time.)
Coming up, I’ve got one of my SO in the KNOW posts for you. (Can you believe I haven’t done one since October?) I’ve been saving up and I’ve got a ton of good stuff to share! Also in the coming weeks, I’ve got posts planned on everything from the best drugstore makeup and the buzziest new beauty ingredient to how to find your purpose in the empty nest and how to super-charge your immune system this winter. If you’re not signed up for my email list, you might consider it. I don’t want you to miss a thing! I send out emails every time I publish a new post (two-three times per week), and you can unsubscribe at any time.
Finally, I want to tell you that I’m so thankful for YOU! I love when I have the opportunity to meet you in person and love reading and responding to your comments here as well as on Facebook and Instagram. I’m amazed every day by your support and encouragement. We’re in it together, friends, and you mean the world to me. I pledge to do my best in 2018 to bring you content that is encouraging, informative, helpful, and most of all, a blessing.
