I’m all about fashion over fifty, but I’m always cautious about how to wear the trends without looking like I’m trying too hard or attempting to dress younger than I should. Oh, don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that women over fifty can’t embrace the latest looks, but I do think we need to do it in an age-appropriate way. Today, I’m tackling some of today’s trendiest looks and sharing six “rules” on how to wear them when you’re over fifty. (Click the links or images for more information.)
Fashion Over Fifty Rule #1: Don’t Go To Extremes
Call me Captain Obvious, but I think women over fifty need to be careful about wearing anything that shows too much skin. It’s just not necessary! As women over fifty, we have so much more to offer, and we just don’t need to lead with that.
I’m also not a fan of distressed jeans that have giant holes in the knees, too many holes, or tons of thread hanging off the hem for women our age. Instead, opt for a cleaner, more mature take on this look, with a few threadbare patches instead of holes or a neat, slightly fringed hem.
Fashion Over Fifty Rule #2: Don’t Wear Unflattering Looks Just Because They’re “In”
Watch out for the tops and sweaters with ruffled sleeves that are everywhere these days. When you put your arms down by your sides, they give the illusion that your entire body is wider than it is! I ordered this darling top and had to return it for that very reason. Also, beware of the terrible tie-front dresses and tops that are in the stores right now. Why in the world would anyone our age want to add bulk in that area? Instead, try a top with a flattering side tie.
Fashion Over Fifty Rule #3: Don’t Show Too Much Skin
Be very careful with the cold shoulder and off the shoulder styles that are everywhere right now. Some of them may show a little too much! Instead, opt for cold shoulder or off the shoulder styles that simply don’t show quite as much. The reason I bought the darling top in the photo above is that it worked as a modified off the shoulder top, sitting right at the edge for a little more modesty. (Plus the plaid is so cute, right?)
Fashion Over Fifty Rule #4: DO Embrace the Trends That Work For You
High-waisted jeans are back! (Can I get a “Hallelujah?”) So are straight leg jeans (I just bought this slimming dark indigo pair) and boot cut jeans. Mules are here again! (Yessss!) And the slip-on sneaker isn’t going anywhere. (Midlife feet, rejoice!)
Fashion Over Fifty Rule #5: DO Incorporate the Smaller Trends
Adding in some of the smaller trends to your overall look can keep you looking updated and fresh. Look for things like pearl embellishments, embroidery, multi-strand necklaces, velvet, statement earrings, totes and clutches.
Fashion Over Fifty Rule #6: DO Pay Attention to Details
Do little things like rolling the bottom hem of your jeans (see photo above), layering multiple necklaces you already own, tucking in the front (only) of your button down, or painting your nails in one of the hottest colors for fall. Paying attention to the little things can make the biggest difference!
I think the ultimate fashion over fifty rule of thumb is to listen to your instincts. If you try something on and you feel even slightly unsure about it, it might be best to pass. I’ve found that if I feel unsure and buy it anyway, I continue to feel unsure and it hangs unworn in my closet because I can’t talk myself into wearing it. Have you found that too?
Happy Friday, y’all! I hope you’ve got fun weekend plans. Bob and I are going to pack because we’re headed out on our empty nester getaway (+ one law student on fall break!) next week. We’re headed to Walt Disney World in Orlando, and we’re so excited because doing the parks as adults will be a new experience for us. I’ll be posting snaps on my Instagram and Facebook throughout our trip, so be sure to follow me for all the fun!
