Who doesn’t want brows that wow? Functionally speaking, brows are there to block debris and sweat from getting into our eyes, but they also add shape and lift to our faces and frame our eyes. Balance this with the fact that as we age, our brows tend to thin out (as does all our hair). As I have aged, I have not only embraced products that promote brow growth, but I’ve also come to value professional brow grooming. I started visiting Sarah Walker back when she worked for at the Benefit Cosmetics Brow Bar at my local Ulta store. I knew if she worked for Benefit, she had been adequately trained and vetted, and that was important to me. Since then, she’s gone out on her own, and I am still a loyal client. She is a true expert at personalizing each client’s look, and after a session with Sarah, I feel like I’ve had an instant facelift! I’ve learned so much from her over the years, and I’m thankful that she agreed to share her expertise (and products recommendations!) with us today. Through the images in this post, I’m taking you behind-the-scenes of my last brow grooming session with Sarah.
Sarah, tell us a little about your business and how you got into it.
I own and operate Sarah Walker Brow Studio, with a sole focus on brow and facial waxing and brow and lash tinting. After getting my aesthetician license, I worked in spas doing skincare. As much as I loved skincare, I found the whole idea of being in a room in the back of a spa pretty lonely and boring! I started working for Benefit cosmetics, and in 2010 I helped open the first “brow bar” in Dallas located inside of Ulta Beauty. I built up a very loyal following and decided to go out on my own and open up my own salon studio. That was over two years ago.
Why are groomed brows important for women?
A groomed brow is important for a woman because it gives a polished and clean look whether you wear make-up or not. Waxing the brows can actually make them appear thicker by getting rid of all the strays, make the area cleaner for eye makeup and also help give the appearance of a raised eyelid which looks more youthful.
What are the most common mistakes you see women make when they try to do their own brows?
The most common mistake women make when they try to do their own brows is either using a stencil or not mapping their brows. Women need to realize that their face is not symmetrical and therefore the brows are not identical. Typically, all these things cause over-tweezing.
What is the current trend for brows?
For awhile now it has been the full, arched brow. Now we are seeing it even bushier! Color-wise, we are seeing a lot of ombre brows. Bushy and ombre brows are super youthful, and not always realistic for a mature woman day-to-day.
What would you say to women 50+ who are worried that their brows are thinning and may think the last thing they should do is have their brows professionally done. (I think we are afraid of over-tweezing, leading to even thinner brows…)
The older we get our brows naturally thin out and become more sparse, but a good aesthetician can help shape the brow and maintain it for you so that you won’t be tempted into over-tweezing or plucking them into an unflattering shape.
We all know that there are products like Rogaine for Women that we can use on thinning hair, but are there any products that you recommend to help restore thinning brows?
The best products I have found for thinning brows are RevitaBrow, Peter Thomas Roth Brows to Die For, and Rapid Brow. These are all serums that are applied to the area once or twice a day for 1-2 months. They all have a very good track record of helping regrow the hair in the brow area with consistent use. What are some other tips, tricks, or products that we can use to enhance and groom our brows?
There are so many excellent brow products out there to help fill in and enhance the brows! If you love a pencil to fill in and enhance, my favorites are the Chanel Sourcils Sculpting Eyebrow Pencil. I also like It Cosmetics Brow Power Universal Brow Pencil, and the Lancome Le Crayon Poudre Pencil. I also love a good powder/wax combo, and my favorite is Benefit Brow Zings. A tinted brow gel would be my biggest tip for ladies who have gray in their brows and don’t want to tint professionally. The best I have found are Anastasia Beverly Hills Tinted Brow Gel, and Benefit Cosmetics Gimme Brow. To highlight the brow bone and give that “lift” to the eye area, I like Benefit High Brow Highlight and Lift Pencil. Finally, my number one piece of advice is to go and get a clear brow gel (I like the one by Ardell.), and keep it in your makeup bag at all times! A clear brow gel can help blend your brow product, help your brows keep their shape all day, and make the eyebrow instantly look polished.
What other facial grooming do you suggest for women over 50?
Eyebrows and facial hair can start to become problematic for women over 50 because of hormone changes. Waxing is an excellent solution for excess facial hair and to help clean and reshape the brows.
How often do brows and other facial grooming need to be maintained?
The frequency of brow and facial waxing is extremely individual. Most of my clients make appointments once a month, but there are quite a few that see me every two, three, or six weeks. I also have clients that just need me to reshape their brows from time to time, and they maintain them the rest of the year. After working with a client, we usually decide that together.
(Suzy) Many thanks to Sarah for sharing her expertise and all of those great product recommendations! Please know that I have linked to the best prices (and free shipping whenever possible) I could find for you all! Also, note that, unfortunately, Ulta will not honor their weekly coupons on these products as they are considered “prestige” brands. They do offer free shipping on orders over $35, so you might just want to use my links, order online and skip the hassle of the store. Also, Sarah has offered an exclusive 20% first-time client discount for Empty Nest Blessed readers. (She is located in Dallas, Texas.) She sees clients by appointment only, and you can contact her at (214) 662-1984 or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
I hope you learned as much as I did today! Most importantly, I strongly feel that we need to tell our daughters that we are considering bushy, ombre brows for our new look in 2017.

P. S. I am SO sorry I have SO much makeup on in these photos! We had just finished my holiday photo shoot (with all of those photos you saw during the month of December) and stuck this brow appointment on at the end. Please know I usually don’t wear this much makeup. LOL! That said, here’s the info on my look. (Including my cashmere crew neck sweater that is now 50% off.)
