Want to peek inside my makeup drawer? I’ve posted before about some of my favorite beauty products, and I still really love all of the ones I recommended to you in that post. Today I’m sharing my must-have makeup products. You may be surprised at the variety of high-end and drugstore brands in my makeup drawer! Of course, being a typical woman, I am always looking for the next latest and greatest product that will make all my beauty dreams come true! Please know that I am super picky and would only share and recommend products that I use and love myself. Read on for my favorites. (All links are clickable/shoppable. I’ve done my best to search out the lowest price and free shipping – when available – just for you!)
I love a good primer. Primers act as a wrinkle filler and help foundation glide on smoothly. I’ve tried lots, but these two have become my very faves. I use Veil Mineral Primer for my face, and wonderful Smashbox Photo Finish Hydrating Under Eye Primer for the thirsty, crepey-prone eye area.
I’m obsessed with sun protection, so I use Elta MD oil-free, tinted mineral sunscreen (41 SPF) on top of my primer. Sometimes, that’s all I wear! I love that it’s oil-free, and the fact that it’s a mineral-based product means I can use it around my eyes without stinging. If I want more coverage, I use Garnier’s BB Cream for oily/combo skin on top of the tinted sunscreen. It offers light-weight protection and won’t leave me shiny. The makeup artist I use for some of my Empty Nest Blessed photo shoots told me about Giorgio Armani’s Fluid Sheer, and I am totally in love! It is an illuminator, complexion perfector, and gives you that glow. You mix a tiny bit (which is good – because it is expensive!) with your foundation. I get compliments on my skin whenever I use it.
I am so into eyelashes; I did an entire post on them! I’m a pretty demanding gal when it comes to mascara. It can’t flake during the day or leave smudges under my lower lashes, and it has to come off easily with soap and water. I take a nap every day, so it has to make it through naptime and be good to go for the rest of the day. Maybelline’s Lash Sensational Mascara met my high standards. I apply two or three coats on the top lashes and one on the bottom. (If you want to review the technique the “experts” recommend for applying mascara, click here.) Lately, I’ve been really into Diorshow Maximizer 3D Triple Volume Lash Primer as an alternative to using an eyelash curler. It somehow (?) makes my eyelashes curl and plumps them up too. Volume city, people! The eyeliner at the top of my list? Physician’s Formula Eye Booster 2-in-1 Lash Boosting + Serum. It is an eyeliner that goes on like a marker plus an eyelash growth booster all in one product. Love! The product next to the eyeliner in the photo above is Rapidlash, an eyelash enhancing serum that I use every night. I’ve found that it boosts the length and fullness of my lashes with regular use. Finally, for that smeary problem we all have when we try to wear a moisturizing under-eye cream or concealer along with mascara, I use Clean & Clear’s Oil Absorbing Sheets (not pictured). They come in packs of 50, but I cut them in fourths, so I end up with 200 little squares. As the last step in applying my makeup, I lightly blot that under-eye area and stay smear-free all day! I think it works better than using powder under there, as powder can tend to settle into those little under-eye wrinkles we all have.
Eye Shadow Primer –
I love Too Faced’s Shadow Insurance in Champagne. It covers discoloration and gives a nude sheen. Sometimes I wear it alone and don’t even bother with eye shadow! It also comes in Natural, but I prefer the Champagne because it has a little shimmer to it. They’ve changed the packaging recently, but not the product. This baby locks down your eye shadow, and it won’t crease or fade. Honest.
I have discovered a lip plumper that works and tingles nicely but doesn’t burn! It’s Dior Addict Lip Maximizer High Volume Lip Plumper. It can be worn alone, under, or even over lipstick for a great shine. As far as lip color goes, I don’t know about you, but I am so over those drying long-wearing lip stains! (I’m talking to you, Cover Girl.) Stila’s Lip & Cheek Stain (not pictured above) is moisturizing and won’t dry you out. If you tend toward dry skin or are just getting drier with age (like me!), give it a try. It comes in 4 different shades. I’ve been wearing Cherry Crush, but I am dying to try them all. It is sheer enough that I can use the Dior Addict Lip Maximizer High Volume Lip Plumper right on top for the best of both worlds!
Ambi Fade Cream –
After all those years in the carpool line (Thanks, kids!), my hands were showing the effects of the sun. After using Ambi Fade Cream (not pictured above) once a day (or twice if I remember), my age spots are GONE. It contains Hydroquinone, which is a skin bleaching agent, and has Vitamin E and Alpha Hydroxy Acid to help with wrinkles too. Best of all, it contains a sunscreen to protect those nasty spots and wrinkles from coming back.
Makeup Brushes –
I really like E.L.F. brushes (not pictured). They are inexpensive, and the quality is good. Since I like their contouring brushes so much, I decided to try their eyeshadow brushes as well. I use the angled one to put shadow in the crease, and the puffy one for blending. Viola! Amazingly, Amazon is offering a set of 12 E.L.F. brushes for only $12!
