Don’t you just love a New Year? Things just feel all fresh and, well, NEW. It’s a great time to reassess and think about the changes you want to make in the coming months. While some of those resolutions (like the classic lose weight and get in shape) can be somewhat daunting, I want to share some small, easy resolutions that will make a big difference right away. So let’s take stock together and get excited about 2017!
Want an easy resolution? Smile more! People who smile are simply more approachable and winsome. Also, smiling can take years off of your face. Christie Brinkley, who is still stunning at 62, says that smiling is her number one beauty secret. “Smile. It instantly lifts the face and it just lights up the room,” she recently told Savannah Guthrie on the Today Show. A sweet friend gave me the book 365 Reasons for Smiling: In Thoughts and Pictures a last year, and it was just the best gift. The funny photos of animals, kids and yummy treats never fail to bring a smile to my face!
Whiten Your Teeth
If you are going to be smiling more, this is a must. There are a variety of methods, from Crest Whitestrips to Whitening Accelerators that utilize LED lights. I treated myself to the Go Smile Dental Pro Teeth Whitening toothbrush earlier in the year, and I have been so happy with the results! I used to use Crest Whitestrips several times a year, but this has eliminated the need for that. I use this blue light toothbrush with the accompanying whitening gel a couple of times a week to maintain a whiter smile. Our teeth naturally yellow with age as our enamel thins. Then, of course, there’s that little matter of our coffee/tea addiction, and there we go! So, the older we get, the more important this becomes. It is a quick anti-aging fix!
Stand up Straight
Good posture not only will help with back and neck pain, but it also makes you look taller, slimmer, and more confident. In the smartphone era, “tech neck” is probably something we should all be aware of and working to combat. “Tech neck” refers to the neck pain (and postural changes) that can result from continuously looking down at a computer screen or handheld device. There are lots of aids available to help you with this resolution, from posture corrector braces and shapewear to Lumo Lift’s Posture Coach and Activity Tracker. (Featuring a small sensor that vibrates if you slouch and also tracks steps, calories burned and distance traveled via their app. It is very cool.)
Life has its challenges, but an attitude of gratitude and a decision to focus on the positive can go a long way towards helping you on the journey. In her book, Positivity, Dr. Barbara Fredrickson shares her research, which shows, among other benefits, that positive emotions lower blood pressure and the risk for cardiovascular disease. In his book, Happiness, theologian Randy Alcorn points to Scripture, offering many examples of God’s desire for His children to be happy. Finally, you have probably heard of The Happiness Project, an excellent book by Gretchen Rubin, who spent a year testing out age-old wisdom, current scientific research, and even advice from pop culture about how to be happier. It’s a fun read.
