Transitional dressing is serious business down here in the South. We want to look stylish, but with the mercury hovering in or near the 100s, we Southern Belles have to plan ahead to stay on point. Since you’re probably shopping now for transitional clothing, I thought I’d share a few tips on how we gals in the South style our transitional wardrobes.
Use Cool Fabrics in Darker Colors
Here in the South, around mid-August, we pause for a moment of silence as we pack away our Lilly Pulitzer for another year. (BTW, in a quick aside, Lilly Pulitzer announced just this week that they are now offering free shipping and returns. Commence the Hallelujah chorus!) Please note, if you’re headed somewhere tropical on your empty nester fall getaway like we are this year, leave it out so you can pack it. 🙂 Then we pull out short-sleeved, three-quarter sleeved, or even long-sleeved tops in fabrics like cotton or rayon. My darling red cotton button down with the scalloped placket is from the Draper James line at Nordstrom. It’s 30% off right now and also comes in navy. (Oh, and Sunday, August 6 is the last day of the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, so you might want to give everything one more quick look. I will be!) In case you’re not familiar with Draper James, it’s ultimate Southern Belle Reese Witherspoon’s decidedly girly lifestyle brand.
Style Tip: Roll the sleeves of your long-sleeved tops before you put them on. This will result in a cleaner line, and you won’t have to struggle with the tricky one-handed roll.
Plan Long Term
When you shop for transitional dressing, look for things you can swap in when the weather gets cooler. When the temperature drops, I’ll switch out my white jeans for my favorite NYDJ black skinny jeans (order a size down), change to these oh-so-comfy leather tasseled booties from Tom’s, and add this Tory Burch handbag. I’d also probably do a half-tuck in the front, leaving the back out and adding this belt.
Work in Fall Accessories
One of the true keys to transitional dressing, when it’s sweltering outside, is to add in jewelry, belts, handbags, and shoes in the fall colors. As I shared in my post on how to makeover your man, the newer brown (for men and women) is an orangey chestnut brown. Also look for accessories in Cabernet, a dark burgundy shade. Here, I opted for classic black, mostly because I have been dying to share this purse with you and I needed a good excuse! This versatile Tory Burch Ivy convertible shoulder bag is the bag I took to Europe with me earlier this summer. The best thing about it? It expands via the side zipper. It was perfect for travel, and I carried it all through the Riviera! It’s 20% off right now.
Got big weekend plans? I’m doing a photo shoot on Saturday morning featuring a bunch of fall looks that I just can’t wait to bring to y’all in the next few weeks. I’m praying for cool weather so I don’t sweat to death! I’m so excited because my son who has been clerking in Austin this summer will be home today! (Unfortunately, he leaves Monday to head back to Alabama for his final year of law school.) The rest of Saturday we’ll spend puppy sitting our little grand puppy so the newlyweds can go to Six Flags. Sunday, there’s church, of course, and then that afternoon and evening we’re hosting our big family Birthday extravaganza and pool party. It’s the last time we’ll all be together for awhile, so it’s bittersweet for sure. Next week, my daughter and I are taking off for a big adventure. I can’t wait to fill you in on all the details!
What’s up with your weekend? Leave me a comment and let me know what you thought about today’s post, okay? I’d love to know if you like these kinds of posts or if there’s anything special you want me to cover in the next few weeks.
